Q1- The input power to a 3-phase a.c. motor is measured as 5kW. If the voltage and current
to the motor are 400V and 8.6A respectively, determine the power factor of the system?

Q2- Two wattmeters are connected to measure the input power to a balanced 3-phase load by
the two-wattmeter method. If the instrument readings are 8kW and 4kW, determine (a) the

Q3- Two wattmeters connected to a 3-phase motor indicate the total power input to be 12kW.

Q6- A 415V, 3-phase a.c. motor has a power output of 12.75kW and operates at a power
factor of 0.77 lagging and with an efficiency of 85 per cent. If the motor is delta-connected,

Q7- A 400V, 3-phase star connected alternator supplies a delta-connected load, each phase of
which has a resistance of 30ohm and inductive reactance 40ohm. Calculate (a) the current
supplied by the alternator and (b) the output power and the kVA of the alternator, neglecting
losses in the line between the alternator and load. [(a) 13.86 A, (b) 5.76 kW, 9.60 kVA]

Q8- The phase b voltage and the phase b current of a balance three-phase system are V= 220
sin (wt-210°) and I= 10 sin (wt-180°). [5715.76 W]

Q9- In a 3-phase, 3-wire system with star connected load the impedance of each phase is
(3+j4) Ω. If the line voltage is 230V, calculate the line current. [26.56A]

Q10- The three inductive coil having resistance of 16 ohm and reactance 12 ohm are
connected in star across a 440 V, 3 phase 50 Hz supply. Calculate (a) power factor (b) phase

Q11- A balanced abc-sequence Y-connected source with Van  10010⁰ V is connected to a

Q12- Three coils, each with resistance of 45 ohm and with 0.2 H, are connected to a 415 V,
three-phase supply at 50 Hz (a) in mesh, (b) in star. Calculate the current in each coil and the
total power in the circuit in each case.

Q13- Three similar inductors, each of resistance 20 ohm and inductance of 0.05 ohm are
connected in delta to a three-phase, 415 V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate (a) the line current, and

Q14- Three similar coils each of inductance 0.1 H and resistance 30 4 are connected to a 415
V, three-phase, 50 Hz supply, (a) in star (b) in delta. Calculate the current in each coil and the

Q15- Three balanced loads are connected in delta and take a power of 30 kW at 0.8 power
factor from a three-phase, 415 V supply, Calculate the line current. If the above loads are
reconnected in star to the same supply, what power would be consumed? [52.25 A, 10 W]

Q16- Three identical non-inductive resistances are connected in star across a 400 V, three-
phase, 50 Ha supply. Calculate: (a) the value of each resistor if the line current is 5 A, and (b)
the total. power consumed. If the resistors are now connected in delta across the same supply,
calculate the line current and the power consumed. [(a) 46.2 ohm (b) 3.464 kW; 8.65 A.

Q16- A three-phase delta-connected load, each phase of which has an inductive reactance of
40 and a resistance of 25 12, is fed from the secondary of a three-phase star-connected
transformer, which has a phase voltage of 240 V. Draw the circuit diagram of the system and
calculate: (a) the current in each phase of the load; (b) the p.d. across each phare of the load;
(c) the current in the transformer secondary windings; (d) the total power taken from the
supply and its power factor. [(a) 8.8 A; (b) 416 V; (c) 15.25 A, (d) 5810 W, 0.53 lag]

Q17- A three-phase, star-connected alternator supplies a delta-connected load with a 415 V,


50 Hz supply. Each phase of the load has a resistance of 15 ohm and a reactance of 25 ohm
Calculate (a) the current in each phase of the load; (b) the alternator phase voltage and
current; (c) the power factor of the load; (d) the total power taken by the load. Sketch the
circuit diagram and show on it the phase and line voltages and currents.

Q18- A three-phase 74.6 kW, delta connected induction motor is connected across 400 V
supply. The efficiency and the power factor of the motor are respectively 0.85 p.u. and 0.9.

Q19- Three similar impedances are connected in delta across a three-phase 400 V, 50 Hz
supply. The line current is 12 A at a power factor of 0.8 logging. Calculate the inductance and
resistance of each impedance. [(0.11 H, 4620ohm]

Q20- Three chokes, resistance 40 ohm, reactance 30 ohm are connected. (a) in star, (b) in
delta, to a 400 V, three-phase balanced supply. What is the line current in each case and the
total power dissipated? [(a) 4.62 A, 2560 W (b) 8 A. 7680 W]

Q21- A 415 V, 3-phase star connected alternator supplies a delta-connected induction motor.
The motor has a full-load efficiency of 0.87 p.u. and power factor 0.8, Calculate the current
in each phase of the motor and the alternator if the output of the motor is 14.92 kW. [17.2 A,
29.8 A]

Q22- Two wattmeters are connected to measure power in a 3-phase circuit. The reading of
one of the wattmeters is 8 kW when the load power factor in unity. If the power factor of the
load is changed to 0.707 lagging, without changing the total input power, calculate the
readings of the two wattmeters. [P1=12.62 kW. P2=3.38 kW]

Q23- Each phase of a balanced star-connected load, consisting of a resistance of 10 ohm in


series with a reactance of 20 ohm, is connected across a 400 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase supply.
Calculate the readings of the two wattmeters used to measure total load power. [P1= -247 W,
P2 =3448 W]

Q24- The total power input to a 3-phase synchronous motor is 10 kW at 0.4 leading power
factor. Determine the readings of the two wattmeters used to measure power input to the
motor. [P1= -1.61 kW. P2 =11.61 kW]

Q25- Two wattmeters are used to measure power input to a synchronous motor. Each
wattmeter reads 30 kW. If the power factor of the motor is changed to 0.866 leading,
determine the readings of the two wattmeters, the total input power remaining the same.

Q26- Two wattmeters connected to measure the input to a 3-phanie, 400 V circuit indicate
3000 W and 5000 W Find (a) the total power, (b) the power factor of the circuit and (c) the

Q27- Power in a 3-phase balanced circuit is measured by 2 wattineters, and the readings of
the wattmeters are 5 kW and -0.5 kW. Find the total power and power factor of the circuit.

Q28- In a 3-phase circuit two wattmeters used to measure power indicate 1000 W and 500 W
respec tively. Find the power factor of the circuit (a) when both wattmeter readings are
positive. (b) when the latter reading is obtained by reversing the current-coil connections.

Q29- In a three phase circuit, the power is measured by two wattmeters. If the total power is
25 kW and the power factor is 0.7 leading, what will be reading of each wattmeter? For what

Q30- The star-connected secondary of a transformer supplies a delta-connected motor taking


a power of 90 kW at a lagging power factor of 0.9. If the voltage between the lines is 600 V,
calculate the current in the transformer winding and in the motor winding. Draw circuit and
phaser diagrams, properly labelled, showing all voltages and currents in the transformer
