TOWSON Pick any major motion picture. It features sound effects, music or even spoken words from actors added in during the post- production process. If done properly, movie viewers dont even notice the magic done by audio experts after movie scenes are shot and filming is wrapped. Towson University graduate Russell Farmarco, a Hollywood FARMARCO dialogue editor, shared some of his secrets with students at his alma mater Tuesday in an evening lecture. Farmarcos completed audio work on several notable comedies in the last two decades, including Grown Ups, 50 First Dates and The Waterboy. People dont notice what I do, he said. I kind of get a kick out of that. Farmarco rarely appears on set during filming. Instead, he does his work in a studio, where he painstakingly ensures that all movie dialogue is as cl ose to perfect as possible, even if it means editing in lines that are recorded after initial filming. To prove his point, he showed a few scenes of Water for Elephants, a 2011 movie in which Jaco b Jankowski

(Robert Pattinson) joins the Benzini Brothers circus after his parents are killed in a car accident. In one scene, where Pattinsons character is moving through a train ferrying the circus cast to the next show, nearly all the audio was added after filming, including about half the lines. When actors are brought in to provide audio after the fact, the process is called automatic dialogue replacement. It is used when sound quality is too poor on initial shoots, he said. Farmarco said most actors abhor the idea of having their words edited into scripts, but in many cases it is necessary to ensure spectacular sound on multi- million dollar motion pictures. The process can last a few weeks up to a few months, he said. Farmarco said the process is a necessity in action films when explosions and other ear- splitting noises can render audio diff icult to hear. Farmarco sticks mostly to audio for comedies, and hes worked on dozens of high- profile ones, including several box off ice hits starring Adam Sandler. A fter f ilming wraps, Farmarco prepares the audio for a screening of the movie. Directors then videotape a live audience watching the flick to see which jokes generated laughs and which ones didnt. If a gag bombed, they will often be edited out. Not everything is as it appears with movie sound, Farmarco said. Please see Grad, C2
