OVEARALL COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aim and objective of the course is to expose the students to the formal structure of electromagnetism so
that they can use these in engineering as per their requirement.

Prerequisites: Basics concepts of Physics and Mathematics.

COURSE OUTCOMES

After studying this course, the students will be able to: -

 Specify the constitutive relationships for fields and understand their importance.

 Describe the static and dynamic electric and magnetic fields for technologically important structures.

 Measure the voltage induced by time varying magnetic flux.

 Acquire the knowledge of Maxwell equation and electromagnetic field theory and propagation and
reception of electromagnetic wave systems.

 Have a solid foundation in engineering fundamentals required to solve problems and also to pursue higher
studies.

DETAILED SYLLABUS

PART-A

UNIT I: Electrostatics in vacuum and linear dielectric medium (10 lectures)


Calculation of electric field and electrostatic potential for a charge distribution; Divergence and curl of
electrostatic field; Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations for electrostatic potential; Uniqueness theorem (Definition);
examples: Faraday’s cage; Boundary conditions of electric field; Energy of a charge distribution
and its expression in terms of electric field. Electrostatic field and potential of a dipole. Bound charges due to
electric polarization in Dielectrics; Electric displacement; Solving simple electrostatics problems in presence of
dielectrics – Point charge at the centre of a dielectric sphere, charge in front of a dielectric slab.

UNIT II: Magnetostatics in linear magnetic medium (10 lectures)


Bio-Savart law, Divergence and curl of static magnetic field; Concept of vector potential, Magnetization and
associated bound currents; auxiliary magnetic field; Boundary conditions, Solving for magnetic field due to bar
magnet; magnetic susceptibility and ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and diamagnetic materials; magnetic
domains, hysteresis and B-H curve.

PART-B
UNIT III: Faraday’s law and Maxwell’s equations (10 lectures)
Faraday’s law; equivalence of Faraday’s law and motional EMF; Lenz’s law; Electromagnetic breaking and its
applications; Differential form of Faraday’s law; energy stored in a magnetic field. Continuity equation for current
densities; Modifying equation for the curl of magnetic field to satisfy continuity equation; displacement current
and magnetic field arising from time-dependent electric field; Maxwell’s equation in vacuum and non-conducting
medium; Flow of energy and Poynting vector and Poynting theorem.

UNIT IV: Electromagnetic waves (10 lectures)


Wave equation for electromagnetic waves in free space and conducting medium, Uniform plane waves and
general solution of uniform plane waves, relation between electric and magnetic fields of an electromagnetic
wave their transverse nature.; Linear, circular and elliptical polarization, Reflection and transmission of
electromagnetic waves from a non-conducting medium-vacuum interface for normal incidence.

Attendance Policy:

1. It is compulsory for all the students to have 75% attendance in each subject at the end of the semester failing
which the student will not be allowed to write the final exam.
2. Students can score marks in attendance as per the following rule:
Upto 75% - Nil Above 75% to 80% - 2 marks
Above 80% to 85% - 3 marks Above 85% to 90% - 4 marks
Above 90% to 95% - 5 marks Above 95% - 6 Marks

The students will be divided into groups of 3 or 4. Each group will be assigned a project in the month of

August.

The projects are as follows:

3. How to make vacuum cleaner using bottle.

5. Mini handpump.

Guidelines for Presentation:

Presentation will be held during the semester about which you will be informed well in advance. The rules
for presentation are :

 Each student has to deliver individual presentation.


 The topic of each student will be decided by the Course Instructor.
 The Presentation Topic will be given in advance atleast 10 days before the date of presentation.
 Students must come in strict formals on the day of presentation.
 The attendance will be awarded according to the number of the sessions attended by the students.
 It is COMPULSORY for all the students to deliver the Presentation in order to clear the Internals of
that subject.
 Every Presentation should include at least 5 MCQs related to the topic of the presentation.
 Every student will be given 6- 10 minutes for their presentation.

Tutorials

Students will be assigned few practical problems to be solved based on the syllabus covered in class. The
students will solve those questions at their home and discussion will be held in the Tutorial lecture. The doubts
of the students in those problems will be handled by the Course Instructor during the Tutorial lectures.

Note

 There will be NO REMAKE of Mid-Semester Examinations. The students are advised to appear in all the
evaluation parameters as per Class Calendar with preparation to avoid any inconvenience.

 If any student is caught copying or using unfair means in any evaluation parameter, then that student will
get Internal REAPPEAR in that subject.

 The date of conduct of all the Evaluation parameters will be plotted in the Class Calendar. You are
supposed to follow the Class Calendar to keep a track of the date of conduct of all the evaluation
parameters.

 You should read the college Rule Book thoroughly to avoid any confusion. Feel free to ask queries if any.

CLASS ROOM POLICIES

Following are the classroom policies and they are meant to be strictly followed:

 Attendance will be taken within the first 5 minutes of the start of the lecture, after that student will be
allowed to sit in the class but attendance will not be given to the late comers.
 Be punctual in the class, try to maintain decorum if you are late.
 Mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom.
 During lecture delivery, if you have any kind of query, just raise your hand. Queries are important for
the understanding of the concepts. So, do ask queries but make sure they are relevant to the subject.
