What is Geothermal Energy?

The search for new sources of energy is on. People have become increasingly aware that the supply of
oil, natural gas, and even coal is limited and more expensive. At the same time modern technology and a rising
standard of living all over the world are increasing the demand for readily available and economical sources of
energy. So, more sources of energy are being discovered and studied.

Geothermal energy is the heat deep inside the earth. The word geothermal comes from the Greek words
geo (earth) and therme (heat). This heat from the earth’s interior is a source of energy called Geothermal
Energy. The heat of the earth warms up water which is trapped in rock formations beneath its surface.

How is geothermal energy produced? Wells are dug a mile deep into underground reservoirs to access
the steam and hot water there, which can be used to drive turbines connected to electricity generators. Such
energy can be generated by either geothermal power plant or geothermal heat pump

How is it used? Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source because the water is replenished by
rainfall and the heat is continuously produced inside the earth. People use the steam and hot water that produced
inside the Earth for cooking and in heating systems. The underground reservoirs of steam and heated water can
be used for electricity generation and other heating and cooling applications. One example of heating and cooling
is where a geothermal heat pump is installed around 10 feet underground. These pipes are filled with water or
an antifreeze solution. The water is pumped around the closed loop of pipes. This ground source heat pump
system helps to cool the buildings and maintain warmth during summer. This occurs by absorbing the Earth’s
heat as the water circulates back into the building.

EXAMPLE: Geothermal Energy is a form of energy source that is renewable and sustainable.
