• John Marshall – Federalist
“Midnight Judge” who disagreed
with President Jefferson on many
issues
• William Marbury was another
Midnight Judge who was not
given work papers by James
Madison, Jefferson’s Sec. of State
• Marbury v. Madison- Marshall heard the case and denied Marbury’s request.
First example of judicial review, to declare an act of Congress
unconstitutional.
1790’S
• France was facing their own revolution,
inspired by American
• People felt the King was taking advantage
of them
• Things got radical, beheaded King Louis

• George Washington had issued a
Neutrality Proclamation aka “I’m staying
out of this mess”
• 1799 Napoleon comes to power

• Poor commoner from an
island called Corsica
• Takes over France, but isn’t
“royal” so Europe hates him
• Military genius, decides to
try to take over Europe
HAITI

• Old name Saint Domingue


• France produced a lot of sugar and
made huge profits from its colony in the
island of Haiti
• Massive Amounts of Slave Labor
• Napoleon’s plan was to sell that sugar
and coffee through New Orleans to the
rest of its territory in the Americas
SLAVE REVOLT!

• In 1791, slaves revolted


against their masters.
They successfully took
over the country.
• White people flee, Haiti
creates new
government

• France tried to take island back,
failed due to guerilla warfare
• Led by Toussaint Louverture
• Without money from Haiti, France
loses interest in New Orleans and
territory in Americas
• Sell property in Louisiana Purchase
• Zebulon Pike goes on expedition to
find border with New Spain, in Rocky
Mountains of Colorado

• American merchant ships are making $$$, risky
business
• Barbary Pirates – groups of pirates from North
Africa
• Steal cargo and hold crew for ransom
money
• US is paying large sums in ransoms and
tributes
• Washington and Adams wanted to avoid
conflict, Jefferson wanted military action
• Navy had to protect, sent large warship
“USS Constitution” to protect them
USS CONSTITUTION
• Named by George Washington, world’s oldest
ship still floating
• Nicknamed “Old Ironsides”, wood & iron
• Famous for protection against French in Quasi-
War, defeating Barbary Pirates, and service in
War of 1812
• In service for almost 100 years retiring at 1881,
served as a museum ship after
• Has sailed long voyages in 1997 and 2012
• Currently in Charlestown, MA

• British navy frequently


stopping US ships – took
goods & sailors
• Impressment or
practice of kidnapping
to force people to
serve in navy/army
• Embargo Act – banned
trade with other countries.
Due to aggressive British
and French actions, but
hurt US economy
• British in Canada begin
arming Native Americans
in Northwest Territory…

TERRITORY

• American settlers begin


pouring into this region,
Land Act of 1800. Cheap
land on credit!
• Native Americans were
upset they were losing
their homes in the
Northwest Territory.
• British gave them
weapons
NATIVE AMERICANS FIGHT
BACK
• Tecumseh – Native American Shawnee
tribe who tries to unite the northwestern,
southern, and eastern Mississippi tribes
against the white settlers
• All day battles until US forces defeated
Tecumseh in Battle of Tippecanoe
