DANGEROUS GOODS

HANDOUT
Definitions

Dangerous Goods – Articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety,

property or environment and which are shown in the list of dangerous go

ods in the technical instructions or which are classified according to those

instructions.

Shipper – Person responsible for packing and shipping dangerous goods.

UN Number – The serial number assigned to the article under United Nations classification

system. Example. UN1234

Proper Shipping Name – Every dangerous good is given a proper shipping name, which are listed

in alphabetical order in the iata dgr in blue pages (section 4.2).

Example. 2,2’ – Dichlorodiethyl ether.

Class – Different dangerous goods carry different risks therefore dangerous goods

are divided into 9 different classes. In certain cases this classes are fur

ther sub-divided into divisions to identify particular risk within that class.

Example. Class 3 – Flammable Liquids.

Subsidiary risk – Dangerous good may have two or more hazards, secondary hazard is then

shown in brackets after the main one. When shipping dangerous goods

hazard labels should reflect main and subsidiary risk.

Example. 3 (8) – Flammable liquid, subsidiary risk – Corrosive.


HANDLING LABELS – Packages containing dangerous goods are

normally identified with hazard labels,

intended to alert you to the risks inherent to

the contents. Hazard labels are in the shape of

a diamond and have minimum dimensions of

100x100mm.

Handling Labels – Labels providing handling information. Example. Cargo aircraft only

IATA DGR – iata Dangerous Goods Regulations- easy to use manual published by iata

based on Technical Instructions from icao.

ERG - Emergency Response Guidance - Contains general information on the factors that may

need to be considered when dealing with any dangerous goods incident

and provides specific emergency response drill codes. Located in the flight

deck.
ERG Code – Emergency response drill code referring to Emergency Response Guidance

Packing Group – Each dangerous good is given a packing group which refers to the level of

hazard involved in transporting it by air.

Packing instructions – Special instructions that must be followed when packing specific

dangerous good to ensure maximum safety. Code for packing instructions

can be found under relevant column ( G, I or K) and it refers to specific

instructions on yellow pages of iata dgr.

NOTOC – Notification to Captain. Whenever dangerous goods are being transported

by air, the captain must be notified about that load, therefore he receives

notoc form. notoc is a document providing relevant information about

each dangerous good that has been loaded onto an aircraft. Contains un

number, proper shipping name, class/division, weight and erg code.

Excepted Quantities – Certain dangerous goods, when shipped in very small quantities,

and when packaged in user-tested packaging configurations, are subject to

less stringent regulations. In certain cases the package may be

exempted from most marking, packaging and labeling requirements of

the hazard class.

Limited Quantities – Certain dangerous goods can be transported in non-specific, good quality

packages. Quantity of the article is then reduced. Packing instructions for

Limited Quantities have prefix “Y”. Example. Y123


Name of the column Description

A UN number/ID number The serial number assigned to the article under United
Nations classification system

B Proper shipping name/description Every DG is given a proper shipping name which is listed in
alphabetical order in the IATA DGR in blue pages.

C Class or Division ( Subsidiary risk) Different DG carry different risks therefore DG are divided
into 9 different classes. In certain cases this classes are
further sib-divided into divisions to identify particular risk
within that class. A DG item may have two or more hazards,
secondary hazard is then marked in brackets in this column.

Hazard Labels Packages containing DG are normally identified with hazard

labels, intended to alert you to the risks inherent to the
contents. Hazard labels are in the shape of a diamond and
have minimum dimensions of 100x100mm. See page X

E Packing Group Each DG is given a packing group which refers to the l


evel of hazard involved in transporting it by air:
Packing Group I - High Danger
Packing Group II - Medium Danger
Packing Group III - Low Danger

F Excepted quantities Certain dangerous goods, when shipped in very small


quantities, and when packaged in user-tested packaging
configurations, are subject to less stringent regulations.
In certain cases the package may be exempt from most
marking, packaging and labeling requirements of the hazard
class. See page X

G Limited quantity-packing instructions Packing instructions number authorized for transport of the
substance concerned according to the provisions for limited
quantities.

H Limited quantity-maximum net quantity This column provides the maximum quantity per inner
packaging authorized for transport of the substance
concerned according to the provisions for limited quantities.

I Packing Instructions Packing instructions for the article or substance transported


on Passenger and Cargo Aircraft.

J Maximum net quantity Maximum net quantity of the article or substance under
packing instructions from column “I”

K Packing Instructions Packing instructions for the article or substance transported


Cargo Aircraft only.

L Maximum net quantity Maximum net quantity of the article or substance under
packing instructions from column „K”

M Special Provisions This column indicates that a special provision is relevant to a


substance or article. See section 4.4 of DGR.

N Emergency Response Guidance code Drill code referring to Emergency Response Guidance
