OVERVIEW

Module Name : Introduction to Information Technology

Module Code : CSC40704
Synopsis : This module is for students to learn the basics of IT that include computer hardware, computer software,
computer information processing and pervasive themes in IT for the students to support IT system and apply
the IT system model to assist in accomplish their tasks. This course introduces the knowledge of productivity
software that includes word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentation and basics of computers such as
the input and output devices and network communication by using Microsoft Office packages.
The learning and teaching approach for the module will be student-centred learning approach that enable
students to build knowledge and understand the nature of the basic computing systems and the uses of
common computer applications in completing their daily tasks. The module will be delivered using a blend of
learning approach, using lectures and practicals, reflection as well as self-directed and independent
learning. During practicals, students will be required to engage in group work as well as individual work and
present their ideas/answers to be evaluated constructively by the tutor. Corporate videos and current news
articles will be incorporated in lectures. Activity-based learning approach will be applied during practicals.
Students are expected to spend extra hours on non-contact time per week, engaging in the module.
With the motive “assessment for learning”, the assessments are spread as 70% in course assessment and
30% final examination with heavy concentration on understanding fundamental of IT aspects. There will be
four components of assessments.

Details of each assessment task :

Assessment Task 1:Written and Practical Test

This task is divided into two parts. Part One is a written test where students are required to answer a combination of multiple-choice questions
which will be taken via myTIMES. Part Two is a practical assessment that will be carried out during the practical session. The students will be
tested using MS Excel. There will be a scenarios given and students will be asked to use the applications to provide solutions. All questions
are compulsory.
Assessment Task 2: Group Assignment

Assessment Task 2: Group Assignment (25%) A global issue that affects the global community and environment, possibly in a catastrophic
way, including environmental issues, political crisis, social issues and economic crisis will be given to each group. Students are to provide
information on these issues as an awareness to others. Students should be able to incorporate basic features of Microsoft Word into a report
and to present their findings using a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow presentation. The group members are preselected from the same practical
group. All project team members MUST engage in task preparation and project presentation. During the presentation, each student must be
able to clearly identify their contribution to the deliverable.
Assessment Task 3: Individual Assignment

Assessment Task 3: Individual Assignment (25%) Based on the application chosen, students are asked to develop a digital portfolio to keep a
progress of their learning experiences during this semester. Students are encouraged to continue with this portfolio on their coming semesters
until they graduate. This will serve as a preliminary CV for their internship and job-seeking later. The aim of this Digital Portfolio is: a) To
enhance students’ learning of each subject’s concepts and knowledge b) To ensure students recollect and learn more effectively c) To maintain
a reflective learning of the topics studied in each module d) To set future goals and to be able to track the path towards it. e) To identify the
SWOT attributes of each student
Assessment Task 4: Final Examination

Assessment Task 4: Final Examination (30%) Each student is asked to answer descriptive questions about the concept of hardware and
software components, the fundamental concepts of World Wide Web, network and data communication.

Rubrics for Each Assessment Task :

Assessment Task 1:Written and Practical Test (20%)

Develop documents, presentations, spreadsheets, charts and graphs using application software for a given business case/ scenario.

Criteria Weightage
The test will assess the skills of students in MS Excel. A marking scheme will be 10.00%
used in marking the test.
Identify the hardware and software components, the fundamental concepts of World Wide Web, network and data communication. used in a
computer-based system.

Criteria Weightage
The test will assess Topic 1 to Topic 4 covered in the module. A marking 10.00%
scheme will be used in marking the test.

Assessment Task 2: Group Assignment (25%)

Develop documents, presentations, spreadsheets, charts and graphs using application software for a given business case/ scenario.

Criteria Weightage
Develop a report using MS-Word 10.00%
Develop a slideshow presentation via MS-PowerPoint 5.00%
Identify the hardware and software components, the fundamental concepts of World Wide Web, network and data communication. used in a
computer-based system.

Assessment Task 4: Final Examination (30%)

Identify the hardware and software components, the fundamental concepts of World Wide Web, network and data communication. used in a
computer-based system.

Criteria Weightage
Hurdle assessment guideline for the module:A student must achieve overall weighted average of at least 50% for the module assessment

components to pass this module. Students are required to sit/attempt the final examination. Failure to do so would result in a fail grade (F).

Resit examinations are given to students who fail a subject with a final grade of D+, D or D-, but not F. If the student passes the resit

examination, the maximum grade awarded is a grade of C, irrespective of the actual mark achieved by the student for that resit examination.
