Byerly - Social Story - Conflict With Friends
I based my social story on conflict with friends. Before developing my social story, I would
observe the student to see what is causing the conflict. For my scenario, I assumed the student
was upset because he was not getting to play his way and did not know how to compromise. I
used descriptive and directive phrases with accompanying pictures (Figure 1:1). To implement
my social story, I would first read it to the student. Then, I would review each part and model
what it would look like. Next, I would role-play conflict situations, with me being the one to
compromise. Finally, I would do the same situations, but this time, the student would be the one
to compromise. When the student could resolve conflict successfully, I would monitor his
interactions with friends. If the student could not resolve any disputes or became upset again, I
would repeat the training process with input from the student as to what went wrong.
