How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Introduction: Teacher and students will talk about the different types of weather and what
they look like. This will be a fun class discussion and we can use pictures and PowerPoint to
help introduce the technology tool without saying it yet. I think I will have most of the
presentation premade, but I’ll leave a few spots blank so that way I can just show myself
working on it and using the tools, and then show them how to do it more explicitly as we
move farther into the lesson.
Goals and Utilizing Technology: I will clearly tell them what their goals are in class, and I will
write them up on the board as well so they can look back on it. I will have each student grab
their device / school provided device and we will work on creating a new PowerPoint
together. I plan on doing this part step by step with them and projecting my screen on the
board. I will make one or two slides with them that they will copy very similarly so they can
understand the tools, and then they get time to make the rest on their own. They will be
creating a series of slides about the different types of weather using PowerPoint, and they
can communicate that however they would like as long as they understand the different
types of weather.
Feedback and Conclusion: Students have free reign of the creativity portion of the lesson as
long as it meets the standard of describing the different types of weather (however many will
be on there). I would have expectations for what tools on power point I would like them to
use (like Creative Commons, transitions, audio if possible). Once they complete the standards
and I checked it off, then they can use additional PowerPoint tools if they would like to
expand their creativity. If desired, a few students can present their PowerPoint on the board
and present it and we can talk about the different types of weather again to solidify our
knowledge. We can also talk about what tools students liked most on PowerPoint and why at
the end to assess for future assignments.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

PowerPoint has a lot of features that people of all ages can use in order to express their
ideas. This lesson will show them some of the beginner features of the productivity tool and
will eventually help them work up to creating their own story book. Story making can be very
engaging for k-5 students and really boost their creativity. This lesson has a goal, but also
allows them to use their own ideas and incorporate it into their projects. Sometimes
however, things can get out of hand when students use technology. I will give them allotted
amounts of time to achieve a certain number of slides or set of tool goals before I do a check
in with them. This will be a motivator to keep them on task, but it should not stress them out.
If they finish, they can move on to using other tools or wait until we move on to the next
task.
Another way to keep students on task is by helping them preplan what they would like to put
in their PowerPoint. They can write down what they want or use a story board to lay out their
ideas. This way, they aren’t thinking about what idea they are going to display while being
distracted by the tools. They will have their personal goals and ideas set before they pull out
their toolbox.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity will support UDL because I will have provided options for many tools they can
use to make their PowerPoint. I will communicate to them the goal for our lesson (identifying
and describing the weather) and then the goal for using our basic productivity tool (I will list a
certain set of tools and their requirements). Once they have shown proficient knowledge and
skills in the expected areas, as long as they correctly communicate that they understand what
they learned, they can express what they learned in the rest of the PowerPoint however they
would like. This keeps students motivated and engaged because they have the opportunity to
still use tools that they like and learn better with. They can show their creativity this way and
still show the teacher and class what they learned and what is important to them. Not all
students are big visual creators, and PowerPoint has options to add audio to slides and text
to explain what is being presented. Others are not as tech savvy or don’t enjoy using tech as
much. I can also provide them with the option that they can draw the different types of
weather and place it in their PowerPoint. This way, they can incorporate their interests and
still learn the tools I expect them to learn.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I think that this will impact student learning in a positive and productive manner with the
right planning and flexible options to express what they have learned beyond the standards I
have set. I want students to be able to enjoy themselves even if they are not as familiar with
a program or what I have set them to do. I am here to help them learn each tool and lesson
better and I can incorporate both the goals I have for them as well as the interests they
would like to express to me within that.
