TED TALK SCRIPT

BOTH: ladies and gents a gracious morning to each one.

KATE: I am KATIE and I AM REALM. for today, we will travel in time and look back to the history of English
Literature itself.

YADE: Old English or what we say the Anglo-saxon period. so, what is it?... Although untrained Modern English
speakers will be unable to understand anyone speaking Old English, Old English literature is the foundation of
Modern English literature.

KATE: A poem written by a man named Caedmon was one of the first examples of literature written during the
Old English period. While the Anglo-Saxons were a pagan society, Christian authors have written about their
lives and culture.

YADE: so can you give our dear listeners and viewers a great story belonging in this period?!

KATE: Yes. *effects* it’s Beowulf!

YADE: so who wrote Beowulf?!

KATE: Nobody knooows!! Let’s cut to the chase and tell them the story already!

YADE: It’s introduction opens with the history of the great Danish warrior Kings. It introduces Hrothgar whom
for the last 12 yrs fought the wrath of the monster named, Grendel. Beowulf then came to the rescue as returning
a favor for the King saved his father yrs ago. He vowed to defeat the monster , in their battle Beowulf tore
Grendel’s arm, defeated, the monster went back to his cave and died. The mother was vengeful, so for her
revenge he killed some of the kings’ man, returning to the cave Beowulf was able to follow her and fought with
her, and sliced off her head. Then he tooks Grendel’s head as his trophy. He returned to the Kingdom, and was
proclaim as a … can you guess what?

KATE: uuhmmm. hero?

YADE: Yes! a hero! after the fall of the two kings Beowulf received the crown. for 50 yrs there was peace not
until someone sneaked in to the dragon’s lair and took some of it’s treasure a golden goblet, it angered the
dragon and it caused chaos. Beowulf fought the dragon and before his death, he gave the bounty of treasure
to his people. and lastly, it is in here the essence of an epic poem that..

KATE: Beowulf dies as a hero. It is an epic poem, because it is all about Beowulf’s heroic deeds! Beowulf is the
longest epic poem in Old English. Also, the original copy of the Beowulf manuscript was badly damaged in a fire,
and there is one copy that is only left. Also, Beowulf includes some 36 different words for “hero,” hmmm
interesting. The language used in this epic poem is a mash up from 4 different areas of Medieval Britain which
are; Kent, Murcia, Northumbria and Wessex. This shows how developed and complex English language during
the time when the poem was written.

YADE: and, a film version deviates heavily from the plot, when we say deviates, it means it is led astray from
the original one. The 2007 film made a lot of change, such as the affair between Beowulf and Grendel’s mother.

YADE: And that’s it for today folks!

KATE: So, before we end this talk, we have something to leave you. “In dark of night shall forego the sword,
if he dares to seek war without weapon, and then may wise God, the holy Lord, judge which side will succeed,
which one will win glory, as to him seems right.”
