The Skeletal System
Description: Bones are organs composed of a complex arrangement of several tissues. A typical bone
has compact and spongy osseous tissues, connective tissues, cartilage, and adipose tissue, it also
contains blood vessels and nerves. This activity describes the structures and its physiologic functions.
Instruction: The students are required to answer the following exercises.
I. Objectives: At the end of the activity, the students are able to:
1. Identify bones as either long, short, flat, irregular, or sesamoid.
2. Describe the gross structure of a long bone and identify the parts of a real bone or chart.
3. Describe the difference between compact (cortical) and spongy (cancellous or trabecular)
bone.
4. Identify the microscopic structures of compact and spongy bone on drawings and slides.
II. Materials:
1. Compound Microscope (2-3 per group)
2. Prepared slides of:
- compact bone
- cancellous (spongy) bone
3. Fresh long bones of chicken
4. Dissecting tray and instruments (blunt probe and forceps)
5. Disposable gloves
