Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

The search of the impact and the relationship of a conducive classroom to the

academic performance of the students has raised concern that may affect the learning of the

students. One of the vital sectors that faces this problem is the Grade 10 students of Mindanao

State University Training Center (MSU-UTC). This school is one of the well-known

institutions that provides good quality of learning. The classroom setting becomes a crucial in

shaping students’ learning experiences. The significance of a learning conducive classroom

cannot be understated, as it holds the potential to shape students’ engagement and overall

learning experiences.

Conducive learning has become an integral part of teaching approach and learning

approach of both teachers and students, respectively. In addition, availability of facilities and

basic school equipment such as desk and chairs are often took up with better student learning

achievement. This correlates also to reducing the number of students in classroom,

specifically in rural schools (World Bank Group, 2016). Classroom environment

encompasses the effective utilization of physical and instructional facilities, as well as the

maintenance of discipline optimal teaching and enhanced student learning (Williams, 2016).

Classroom environment that has a positive impact on students’ academic achievement.

Physical facilities such as furniture, electrical supply, painted walls, access to drinking water,

instructional aids like models, charts, overhead projectors and other ICT-related materials

contribute to students’ heightened interest in classroom activities, ultimately translating into

improved academic performance (Suleman et al., 2014). Moreover, the environment of a

classroom plays a key role in elevating students learning and academic performance. Thus, a
2

comfortable, safe, and a favorable climate are some important factors to consider. As it is

beneficial for educators since they can deliver instructions efficiently thereby resulting to

improved academic performance. However, factors such as lack of proper ventilation, lack

proper lightning resources, and lack of good environment may affect students.

This research aims at Grade 10 students about the relationship of learning conducive

classroom to their academic performance as it shows the potential effect of the suitable

facility and environment to various Grade 10 students at their learning experience in MSU-

UTC and how will they adapt to the current environment they face in their classrooms.

The researchers aim to understand the impact of a conducive classroom to the students

and to provide awareness on how this environment affect to the young Grade 10 students on

their performance and to provide their possible preference to aid this problem.

Theoretical framework

The purpose of this study, why the researchers are conducting this research is they are

aiming to know the relationship of a conducive learning environment to the academic

performance particularly to the Grade 10 learners of MSU-UTC because of the problems

which that institution is facing such as lack of facility, lack of learning materials, and lack of

learning facility, such as Computer Laboratory, and Science Laboratory. With this conducive

facility student can engage to much wider knowledge.

In the Self-Determination Theory or SDT it describes that the social-contextual

factors that nurture intrinsic motivation that could lead to the desired educational outcomes

(Deci and Ryan, 1991). And the educational setting can improve student such as support in

classroom environment can develop competence and positive relationship within the
3

classroom (Reeve, 2002). Furthermore, in Bloom’s Taxonomy Theory, it develops to provide

a common language for teachers to discuss and exchange learning and assessment method.

Bloom’s Taxonomy specifically targets these by seeking to increase knowledge, develop

skills or develop emotional aptitude or balance. It also provides a basis for developing sub-

goals and assessment methodology to meet the student goals (Agora, 2001). Thus learning-

conducive classroom could facilitate the progression of students through cognitive levels,

potentially impacting academic performance.

The Theory of Self-Determination allows us to know the factors that could enhance

student’s performance when their psychological need it met, while Bloom’s Taxonomy

Theory it gives emphasizes about students’ skill to their learning outcomes. Thus, the Self-

Determination Theory is most relevant to the aim of this study, given the emphasis of

students’ outcome after meeting the factors that nurture them for their educational outcomes.

Conceptual Framework

This conceptual framework attempts to show the relationship of the variables involved in

the study. As seen in figure 1, the first variable is the independent variable which is

conducive learning environment. The second variable is the dependent variable which is the

academic performance of the students. The third variable is the mediating variable which is

the Classroom, Design, Resources, Interaction, and overall atmosphere.

Statement of the problem

The study aims to address the correlation between the quality of classroom

environment and the academic performance of Grade 10 students of Mindanao State

University-University Training Center. Specifically, the researchers sought to answer the

following questions:

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of?

1.1. Gender

1.2. Current Classroom environment; and

1.3. Previous Academic performance

2. What are the effects of conducive learning in Grade 10 students of MSU

-UTC in terms of:

2.1. Classroom participation

2.2. Class interest

2.3. Students’ academic performance

3. How does the overall classroom atmosphere correlates to academic

success?

4. What recommendation can be made to optimize classroom

environment in order to enhance academic performance?

5. Based on the result, what is the implication of the study?

Significance of study

This study aims at Grade 10 students of MSU-UTC who lacks of conducive learning

experience. The researchers want to provide a knowledge and understanding about the impact

of the conducive learning to their academic performance. This serves as an enlightenment to

everyone about this issue.

7

Students. This study will give students the ability to participate in setting up

productive learning environments in the classroom, which may enhance their performance.

Additionally, they need to know how the learning environment affects their academic

performance.

Teachers. This study will offers teachers new perspectives on how classroom settings

affect students’ learning. The study provides useful suggestions for improving teaching

techniques and developing more productive and encouraging leaning environments.

Parents. This study also helps parents acquire knowledge about how their child’s

performance is impacted by the learning environment, which helps parents make educated

decisions about their child’s education and create a positive learning atmosphere at home.

And lastly is the Future Researchers. Studying the relationship between a conducive

learning environment and academic performance opens up opportunities for future

researchers in the field of education. It allows them to explore innovative approaches,

theories, and interventions that aim to enhance the learning environment for Grade 10

students. This study will help them to focus on the relationship of being conducive in making

the best outcome of both students and teachers.

Scope and limitation

The scope of this study is it only focuses on the relationship of learning a conducive

environment and its possible implications to the academic performance of the Grade 10

students of MSU-UTC. Moreover, it also focuses on the factors that could affect the students

on their academic experience. The researchers only have a limited source for this study hence

generality cannot be applied. The very aim of this research is to find the most preferable

learning preference of the students on their academic performance that relates to the

conducive learning classroom of the Grade 10 learners of MSU-UTC.

Definition of terms

The following terms are conceptually to provide a clear understanding about this

study.

Conducive Learning- A setting which allows for free exchange of ideas, thought,

and skill among teachers and learners to achieve the expected educational goals by

considering the physical, psychological, social, and cultural needs of all the learners

(www.igi-global.com). In this study, it refers to a suitable learning experience of students to

enhance their knowledge.

Academic Performance- It is the knowledge gained which is assessed by marks by a

teacher and/or educational goals set by students and teachers to be achieved over a specific

period of time (Narad and Abdullah, 2016). In this study, it refers to determine the

relationship of having a conducive classroom.

Classroom- A room in school where lessons happen, teachers go here to mark work,

plan, lesson, and teach their students (www.twinkl.com). In this study, it is a term used where

students experience a conducive learning.

Student- A person who attends school, college, or university (Merriam Webster’s

Dictionary). In this study, it is a term used to students who engage and who affected in

learning a conducive classroom.

Relationship- The way in which two or more concept, objects, or people are connected,

or state of being connected (Oxford Dictionary). In this study, it is a term used to find the

connection between conducive classroom and academic performance of students.
