QUESTION 7
7.1 Two friends, Peter and Andile, each received R10 000 to invest for a period of 6 years.
Peter invested his money at 8,5% p.a. simple interest. At the end of the 6 years he
will also receive a bonus of 10% of the initial amount invested.
Andile invested his money at 8% p.a. compounded monthly.
Who will have the bigger investment after 6 years?
Motivate your answer by means of relevant calculations. (5)
7.2 After 5 years a photocopier, costing R16 000, has depreciated on a reducing balance
to a value of R10 834,99.
Calculate the rate of depreciation. (3)
7.3.1 Convert 12% p.a. compounded quarterly to an effective interest rate. (3)

QUESTION 8
8.1 A learner writes an Accounting and a Mathematics examination. He believes that he
has a 40% chance of passing the Mathematics examination, a 60% chance of passing
the Accounting examination and a 30% chance of passing both.
8.1.1 Are the events passing Accounting and passing Mathematics mutually
exclusive? Give a reason for your answer. (2)
8.2 A box of 40 pocket calculators is sent to a store. The owner of the store is not aware
that 5 of the pocket calculators are defective. Two calculators are randomly selected
from the box. The first one is not replaced before the second one is selected.
8.2.1 Draw a tree diagram to represent the above information. Indicate on your
diagram the probabilities associated with each branch as well as all the
combined outcomes. (4)
8.2.2 What is the probability that both the calculators selected are defective? (2)
8.2.3 What is the probability that of the two pocket calculators selected, one
calculator is defective and the other is not? (3)
