ABSTRACT

The advancement of the technology helps the people on their daily lives. As the

technology advance the way of the people, communicate advances too with the usage of

mobile phones. This device allows the people to communicate faster and better. As per

Padilla-Walkler, Coyne, and Fraser (2012) by this new medium its aids in staying

connected to one another. Mobile phones are revolutionary in terms of communication.

This study the researchers ask some students of HUMMS 11 A to know their viewpoints

of how mobile phones play a role in their social lives.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The first chapter shows the problem and its background. It also includes the

introduction, background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the

study, scope and limitations, and lastly definition of terms.

Introduction

Mobile phones are used for many purposes, such as connecting with peers, for

conducting business and in order to access in an emergency. Other people owns more

than one mobile phone for different uses like the other one is for business and the second

one is for personal use or for video games and storing photos or files.

Furthermore, mobile phones are handy that people can use it wherever they go,

especially when someone have internet connection or enough battery to enjoy it, most

likely the teenagers or the youth. Nowadays mobile phones are very essential to them,

such as for educational purposes, for entertainment, to socialize each other and many

more.

In addition, mobile phones developed overtime with huge difference, by now

mobile phones turn into smartphones which is like a mini computer with a lot of

functionalities. Additionally, not only the mobile phones were developed significantly

also the way of communicating and socializing to one another, but people became

isolated into their own tiny world on their phones, separating themselves to the reality.

“An average person spends four years of his/her life looking down at a cellphone. . .

These touchscreens can make us lose touch” (Williams, 2014).

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 4

It is true nowadays that people spend their precious time looking down to their

mobile phone, cellphone and/or smartphone for a particular reason. For example,

someone expected to have a warm and lovely conversation with their family in dinner.

He/she took his/her seat; the other family member is busy with in their own business on

their phones. Instead of communicating to one another the family is isolated on their

phones.

In this case, someone and their family are not building a good relationship and a

healthy lifestyle at the same time which can also imply in any kind of relationship, if

there will be no communication or interaction will happen. People tend to spend time on

their phone rather than having quality time within their family and peers.

Some toddlers who were introduced to mobile phone or related gadgets at very

young age might also affect their social skills, and rather than playing outside with other

kids. “Instead of learning the essential communication skill of talking to someone face-

to-face and looking them in the eye, kids are accustomed to just looking at a screen and

texting someone,” Sara Graham (2014). For some parents it is not kind of a big deal for

their child to access mobile phones at very young age. Over time these kids may have

difficulty talking or communicating to another person for the reason that they grew with

mobile phones.

Mobile phones can also maintain or strengthen relationship. For example, a close

member in someone’s family was working abroad and they can update on each other

through the use of mobile phone and maintain relationship. By this new medium it aids in

staying connected to one another (Padilla-Walkler, Coyne, and Fraser, 2012).

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 5

Thus in this research the researchers will learn the importance and/or role of

mobile phones in connecting and communicating with other people outside the screen.

The researchers pursued the given study to know the impact of mobile phones to

the social life of the people. The generation to today are technologically advance and

since the people are born while the technology is advancing this generation are mostly

focused on their phones causing them to isolate themselves within the screen of their

phones without interacting with other people on daily basis.

Background of the Study

Mobile phones, smartphones, or mobile phones are very useful for many people’s

busy lives, as people can simply send a text message to relay information or send an

email quickly to achieve the same goal as we would communicate in person (Gladden,

2018). These devices are popular with people because of the applications they deliver.

Smartphones make communications relatively easier with people. In different forms of

their daily work, people enjoy a lot of benefits. Some of the advantages smartphones

offer – better means of communication, learning opportunities for users, a great deal of

exposure to the latest developments, ways to develop personalities, simple ways to access

applications, business success ideas, platforms to expand their applications and more.

Smartphones provide a unique way of improving the quality of education. The use

of the Internet has become part of every student's life. The Internet and Smartphones –

provide an alternative channel for providing education and distance learning services.

With the advent of Mobile's, the social life has changed drastically and this area

has experienced most of the impacts of mobile use (Sarwar and Soomro, 2013).
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 6

Social life would change significantly with the introduction of smartphones, and

this domain had had most of the impact of smartphone usage. Smartphones play an

important role in the integration process of people with special needs, elderly people and

certain types of disabilities.

Statement of the Problem

Mobile phones become part of the daily lives of the people, with its different

functionalities it helps most of the people with their daily techno-problems.

The researchers expect to fulfill the following given problems:

1. What is the impact of mobile phones on social life of the people?

Hypothesis

The researchers expect to fulfill the given main questions of the study.

Significant of the Study

This study will give necessary information and knowledge to the following

readers:

To the parents. In this given study, parents will know how to guide their

children in using mobile phones. build much better relationship with their children.

Parents will understand the importance of communication.

To the students. Through this information, students will be able to understand the

importance of building strong relationship thru communicating face-to-face

interaction.

To the future researchers. This research can help the future researchers by using

this study as a reference to their further study. The future researchers will have

knowledge about the use of mobiles phones on communication relationship.

Scope and limitation

The researchers only acknowledge the valid information within the given range of

the study such as stated in the title. A different form of communication devices/tools such

as telegraph, telephone, letters, pack-set (walkie-talkie), will be denied by the researchers.

People who have great communication skills and can maintain relationships well. As well

as people who doesn’t have mobile phone, cellphone, and/or smartphone. The target

participants are five students of HUMSS 11 A of STI College San Fernando.

Review of Related Literature

In this section, the researchers gathered some relevant literatures to the study that

implies to the research.

It is likely said that in every communication on the phone have likely a pattern

that is constant and unlikely to change for long-distance communication. It may also

affect the way you communicate via phone and not face-to-face. As per Devitt and Roker

(2009):

“The interviews explored how mobile phones are used in family communication;

participants’ views about the benefits and disadvantages of mobile phone use; and

issues around safety, surveillance and privacy. The findings show that young

people and parents see mobiles as a key way for families to keep in touch, and to

monitor and ensure young people’s safety. However, some participants felt there

was a downside to this, in relation to some young people either withdrawing into

their own social worlds, or having a false feeling of security as a result of having

a mobile. Gender differences in views and usage were also found. The paper
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 8

concludes with some general comments about the role of mobile phones in family

life.”

For some people having contact via mobile phone is very essential to keep in

touch, and to monitor each other’s safety. But it also comes with its downside which

some people thinks that having mobile phone will lessen their communicating off the

screen. As per Marilyn (2005):

“The mobile phone has led to changed dynamics in the family, with concerns of

protection and surveillance from a parental viewpoint contributing to agreed

changing freedoms for young people. Although functional interaction can be

helpful for the family, other problems can arise such as financial difficulties, non-

custodial parent access, as well as over reliance on the mobile phone for safety

issues and intrusion into young people’s lives.”

By the greatness of the mobile phones to our lives, it also has its own downsides

such as stated above. Communicating via mobile phones can be beneficial to a family,

but it could lead to miscommunication and having gap to one another if the usage of

mobile phones is not controlled. As per Marilyn (2005):

“Young people's use of the mobile phone has been a global phenomenon in the

last years. It is now an integral part of the daily life of teenagers, and is the most

common form of electronic communication for the majority. The mobile phone

has actually evolved from a technical device to a social tool.”

Most of the people have mobile phones, some it was used for gaming,

entertainment, and for communication. Communicating around the world is now easier
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 9

with the help of mobile phones. Addition to that with the help of social application for

mobile phones such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Yahoo and a lot more

connecting with other people from the other side of the world comes with ease. As per

Marilyn (2005):

“Disruptions to classes, incidences of theft and bullying are some of the negative

effects, while texting parents of truants seem to be the only positive factor for the

school.”

In school mobile phones have a lot of negative effects. While communicating

with the parents by texting or calling them when their child had a certain concern in

school is seems the only purpose of a mobile phones for some.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research design, the participants, the instruments used in

data collecting, the procedure of data gathering and the ethical consideration that the

researchers must implement in conducting the study.

Research Design

The study allows the researchers to have a thorough analysis of the HUMSS 11 A

students’ views, so the researchers agree to use a qualitative approach to perform this

study in order to conduct the research correctly. According to Donald E. Polkinghome

(2005) qualitative research is inquiry aimed at describing and clarifying human

experience as it appears in people’s lives. Researchers using qualitative methods gather

data that serve as evidence for their distilled descriptions. Qualitative data are gathered

primarily in the form of spoken or written language rather than in the form of numbers.

Possible resources of data are interviews, finding, records and artifacts of participants.

For analytical usage, the data are typically translated into written text. Interviews design

involves purposive and iterative strategies. Interview data processing requires knowledge

of the essence of self-reports, and the relationship between experience and language

expression. It takes advanced skill and time to produce interview data of adequate breadth

and depth. This deals with the development of useful data from other sources. And as per

Patton (2005):

“Qualitative research analyzes data from direct fieldwork observations, in‐depth,

open‐ended interviews, and written documents. Qualitative researchers engage in

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 12

naturalistic inquiry, studying real‐world settings inductively to generate rich

narrative descriptions and construct case studies. Inductive analysis across cases

yields patterns and themes, the fruit of qualitative research.”

For this reason, the researchers conclude that the use of qualitative research is

appropriate for this study.

In creating the report, the researcher will have a narrative concept. As it is stated

by Golsteijn and Wright (2013):

“Narrative research takes stories as a basis for data collection and analysis, while

portraiture can be used to create written narratives about interview participants”

This chapter concludes with a list of questions that can be used as a guide for

assessing the quality of a piece of qualitative research.

Sampling Method

The study focuses on the perspectives of students, in particular HUMSS 11 A.

And the researchers know that the participants rely on their knowledge and experience.

According to Etikan and Bala (2017) Output the sampling design is based on the

researcher's judgment as to who will provide the best information for the purpose study to

succeed. To have the required information and be willing to share it, the person

conducting the research needs to focus on those people who have the same opinion.
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 13

Participants

The researchers choose the HUMSS 11 A students over other sections because the

students have an experience in social life and they are the one who excel in the categories

that the researchers needed and likely to know their social life when it comes to mobile

phones. The students’ experiences in social life are significant for the researchers’ study

especially their impact through mobile phones.

Instruments

Instruments help the researchers to provide sufficient information or data. The

instruments or tools are ways to gather data (Sobrepena, 2012).

The following objects may help the researchers to gather information:

questioners, and voice recorder. The questioners provide questions that help the

researchers to attain the answers that the participants will be provided, by this the

researchers see the perspective of HUMSS students. Voice recorder helps the researchers

to review the given answer of the participants if there was an error while conducting the

interview.

The researchers use questionnaires and interview the participants with these

following questions:

1. In your own opinion, how do mobile phones help you in terms communicating?

2. What do think is/are the benefit/s of using mobile phones in terms of communication?

3. What do you think is/are the effect/s of mobile phones on people’s social life?

4. Does your mobile phone ever become a distraction to you?

4.1. If your answer is ‘YES’, how?

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 14

4.2. If your answer is ‘NO’, what do you do to keep it from becoming a distraction?

5. What if mobile phones disappeared, how will it affect your social life?

Data Collection

Data collection is a method of gathering information from all available sources to

find answers to this research issue, testing hypothesis and evaluating outcomes

(Dudavskiy, 2019). The researchers use questioners to gather data, this data are from the

participants and this data fall on primary data. Primary data is new information which the

researchers collect directly from the respondents (Allen, 2017). The researchers use one-

on-one interview and questioners to gather the needed information, the researchers rely

on the primary data that they collect.

Step 1
The researchers are selecting students who are willing to participate.

Step 2
The researchers ask for the participants' consent to use a voice recorder during for interview
purposes.

Step 3
The interviewing starts and the questioner starts asking questions to the participants.

Step 4
After that, the researchers gather the data from the participants.

Ethical Consideration

Ethical consideration helps and protects the rights of the researchers and the

respondents from any harm. According to Bryan and Bell (2007) there are important

principles related to ethical consideration are the following:

The participants should not be harm or whatsoever. In any circumstances, the

researchers should not harm the participants in any means of physical, mental, emotional

and social.

Respect the participants. Respect the dignity of the participants is a necessity to

the researchers, the researchers shall respect the participants at any means.

The participants should be voluntary. Forcing the participants to answer the given

questions in any way that violates the participants’ will. The participants also have the

right to withdraw or discontinue the interview.

The identity and the given answers of the participants shall remain confidential.

Exposing of identity of the participant is strictly prohibited by the researchers, any

leakage of information about the participants who partake within the study the

researchers have the full responsibilities among the information that was leaked, this is

also applies to the participants’ answers.

Exaggerating or deception must be avoided affliction in any forms. Manipulating

the answers of the participants in any way must be avoided.

These principles help the participants and the researchers to identify their rights

especially if any of these are been violated.

CHAPTER 3

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE FINDINGS

This chapter describes the researchers ' collected and analyzed data. It also involves

the presentation of data and the interpretation of data which is important for

understanding data.

Data Presentation

The researchers conducted questionnaires on the basis of the problem statement. The

details are presented as follows.

Question #1: In your opinion, how do mobile phones help you in terms of

communicating?

Student 1:” Nakakatulong ito sa akin upang mapadali ang aking pakikipag usap sa

iba, at kung may nais ka man na makausap sa ibang lugar ay madali lang ito.”

Student 2:” Mobile phones helps me a lot in terms of communicating other people

because even though a person is far away from you, you can communicate to

him/her easily because of using mobile phones.”

Student 3:” First of all, mobile phones are hand and convenient. Instead of writing

a letter and waiting for weeks to reply, mobile phones can be used in

communicating in one click.”

Student 4:” Mobile phones have big impact to us as a students. It can help us to

get easily connected to others such as friends, family, classmates, etc.

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 17

Student 5:” Mobile phones help us a lot in communicating with other people,

because these make the communication faster and easier and they are easy to

access.”

Question #2: What do you think is/are the benefit/s of using mobile phones in terms of

communication?

Student 1: “Napapadali nito ung pakikipag mo sa iba, dahil may access ka

sakanila.”

Student 2:” In communication there is what we call encoder and decoder, encoder,

you are the one who create a message to someone and the decoder is the receiver

of your message, and with that, you can be an encoder or a decoder, and it is

where you can get the message easily.

Student 3:” It makes communicating easier. One of the benefits is that no matter

the distance, you can still communicate with other people from different parts of

the world.”

Student 4:” For me, the number one benefit that we can get in terms of

communication is that eventhough you and your family is far away to each other

there's a social media that can used to make interaction with them.”

Student 5:” Just like my answer on the first question. Through mobile phones, we

can easily and fastly communicate with our friends, families, or loveones if

they're not with us. And these can also be used in times of emergency.”

Question #3: What do you think is/are the effect/s of mobile phones to people’s social

life?
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 18

Student 1:”minsan hindi alam ng tao ung mga limitasyon nila.”

Student 2:” I believe that mobile phone has a positive and negative effect in social

life, as we going to look at the positive side of it, mobile phone helps us to easily

communicate with other people and it helps us in terms of educational purposes

but let us look at the negative effect of it, as a millennial, we are only focusing on

our mobile phones, that is the main reason why we forgot our duties and

responsibilities as a son/daughter, student and as a citizen.”

Student 3:” The effect is that, there is "social life" in mobile phones but not in the

real world. Because mobile phones have everything we need, we would rather

stay at home and fiddle in it for a very long time than to go out and have fun with

friends.”

Student 4:” Somehow, there are good effects and bad effects of using mobile

phones. On the side of good, through mobile phones we can easily get pieces of

information. On the other hand, in terms of bad effects not all pieces of

information that we can get on social media is relavant.”

Student 5:” For me, mobile phones have both positive and negative effects to the

people's social life. Through mobile phones, we can gain a lot of friends but at the

same time we'll become less sociable. Because we only connect through network

and not personally. Others would become uncomfortable in talking with other

people personally, but can express themselves through phone. “

Question #4: Does your mobile phone ever become a distraction to you?

a. If yes, how?
IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 19

Student 1:”Yes, dahil minsan hindi ko alam na sumosobra na ako at may mga

kailangan pa pala akong gawin.”

Student 2:”Yes, because sometime when doing important things especially when

with my family and friends, I always use my phone and I lost the bonding with

them and that's why it is a destruction for me.”

Student 3:” Yes. I sometimes would rather watch random videos in Youtube and

communicating with my "online friends" than to pick up my assignments and do

it.”

Student 5:” Yes, I think, most of us are being distracted by our phones, especially

when we are reviewing for our exams. “

b. If no, what do you do to keep it from becoming a distraction?

Student 4:” No, Because I know my limits so that I can keep it from becoming a

distraction to me.”

Question #5: What if mobile phones disappeared? How will it affect your social life?

Student 1:” sa panahon natin ngayon malaking epekto ang walang mobile phone,

dahil isa ang mobile phone sa mga mabilis na pagkonekta sa ibang tao.”

Student 2:” I think if mobile phones disappeared, it will going to affect my entire

life because it is the only thing that helps me when I get emotional, especially

social media sites.”

Student 3:”It will affect my life drastically. Of course, there will be stages of

denial. But I think I will get over it and I might go out often and converse with

people than to bow my head and type.”

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 20

Students 4:”I think there's no problem if someday mobile phones will disappeared

because if past time can survive without mobile phones, I think we can survive as

well.”

Students 5:” Of course, there will be a lot of adjustments. I won't be able to

communicate with my friends easily. I don't think it can totally destroy my social

life because there are still other things that I can do to socialize even without

mobile phones.”

Data Analysis

The researchers analyze all of the provided data in data analysis and

categorize them according to their relatability. The data reviews are as follows.

Question #1: In your opinion, how do mobile phones help you in terms of

communicating?

Student 1:” Nakakatulong ito sa akin upang mapadali ang aking pakikipag

usap sa iba, at kung may nais ka man na makausap sa ibang lugar ay

Student 4:” Mobile phones have big impact to us as a students. It can help

us to get easily connected to others such as friends, family, classmates,

etc.”

Student 5:” Mobile phones help us a lot in communicating with other

people, because these make the communication faster and easier and they

are easy to access.”

According to all the participants, they use mobile phone to help them

communicate well to a person in or out of the country, they also stated that mobile

phone is the portable use.

“It would be easy to believe that communication technology has always allowed

people to overcome barriers of time and space. People can use the internet and

mobile technology to connect with friends and family from all over the world.

While telecommunications allow people to connect with those far away, it would

be an oversimplification to suggest that these technologies make local connections

and relations unimportant.”: Lee Humphreys Cornell University, USA (2010)

Question #2: What do you think is/are the benefit/s of using mobile phones in terms of

communication?

Student 1:”Napapadali nito ung pakikipag mo sa iba, dahil may access ka

sakanila.”

Student 2:” In communication there is what we call encoder and decoder, encoder,

of your message, and with that, you can be an encoder or a decoder, and it is

where you can get the message easily.

Student 3:” It makes communicating easier. One of the benefits is that no matter

the distance, you can still communicate with other people from different parts of

the world.”

Student 4:” For me, the number one benefit that we can get in terms of

communication is that even though you and your family is far away to each other

there's a social media that can used to make interaction with them.”

Student 5:” Just like my answer on the first question. Through mobile phones, we

can easily and fastly communicate with our friends, families, or love ones if

they're not with us. And these can also be used in times of emergency.”

Similar to the first statement of all the participants, they use mobile phone to help them

communicate well to a person in or out of the country, they also stated that mobile

phones are portable to use.

Question #3: What do you think is/are the effect/s of mobile phones to people’s social

life?

Student 1:” minsan hindi alam ng tao ung mga limitasyon nila.”

Participant 1 stated that people don’t know their limitations when it comes to mobile

phones.

Student 2:” I believe that mobile phone has a positive and negative effect in

social, as we going to look at the positive side of it, mobile phone helps us to

easily communicate with other people and it helps us in terms of educational

purposes but let us look at the negative effect of it, as a millennial, we are only

focusing on our mobile phones, that is the main reason why we forgot our duties

and responsibilities as a son/daughter, student and as a citizen.”

Student 4:” Somehow, there are good effects and bad effects of using mobile

phones. On the side of good, through mobile phones we can easily get pieces of

information. On the other hand, in terms of bad effects not all pieces of

information that we can get on social media is relavant.”

As Participant 2 and 4 said that there are positive and negative effects of using a mobile

phone for example; mobile phones are helpful and easy to use for communication but on

the other side mobile phones are distractions and not all information that you can get are

relevant.

Student 3:” Somehow, there are good effects and bad effects of using mobile

Others would become uncomfortable in talking with other

people personally, but can express themselves through phone.”

IMPACT OF MOBILE PHONES IN SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PEOPLE
Page | 24

As stated by the participants 3 and 5 mobile phones is like a hindrance to communicate in

people personally. They also said that it's easy to get social friends. Participant 5 also

stated both negative and positive effects of mobile phone in people’s social life.

“Young people often show an interest in the virtual world's phantasmic interactions, with

mobile interaction as an important social adhesive. With the assistance of our data

analysis we can conclude that the use of chat and IRC are linked to the socialization

process and become autonomous. A key element in young people's mobile

communication is the incorporation of contact into one's own life environment and the

creation of a social identity: it is used to establish who belongs to important social

identities, and how self-presentation is built in relation to others on a social level. Mobile

networking has become an important mean to define the personal space for the young.”

Oksman & Turtiaine (2004).

Question #4: Does your mobile phone ever become a distraction to you?

a. If yes, how?

In accordance with student 1,2,3 and 4, they said that using a mobile phone is a

distraction to them, but their reason' s is different from one another. As the participant 1

said that he/she sometimes don’t know him/her limit. While participant 2 said that he/she

lost the bond with him/her family. As for participant 3 said that he/she rather watch some

random videos and just use mobile communication to his/her friends than to do his/her

assignments and last for participant 5 said that mobile phone is a distraction when he/she

was reviewing. “The mobile phone is a breakthrough advance for human communication.

Individuals who are deficient in self-regulation or with a propensity for addiction may

face challenges in managing these choices strategically.” Prabu David, Jung-Hyun Kim,

Jared S Brickman, Weina Ran, Christine M Curtis (2015).

Question #5: What if mobile phones disappeared, how will it affect your social life?

Student 1:” sa panahon natin ngayon malaking epekto ang walang mobile phone,

dahil isa ang mobile phone sa mga mabilis na pagkonekta sa ibang tao.”

Student 2:” I think if mobile phones disappeared, it will going to affect my entire

life because it is the only thing that helps me when I get emotional, especially

social media sites.”

Student 3:”It will affect my life drastically. Of course, there will be stages of

denial. But I think I will get over it and I might go out often and converse with

people than to bow my head and type.”

As student 1 said that it'll be harder to communicate with other people, same as student 5

said. For students 3 and 4 if mobile phones disappeared they can still communicate with

other people outside the screen. For student 2 if mobile phones disappeared it will affect

people’s social life drastically, for her/him the mobile phones are tools to communicate

better when they are feeling blue.
