CHAPTER 3B: PROJECT MANAGEMENT

CLO3 Apply the engineering Assessment by:

(C3) design process and the
importance of project Assignment and
management in Final Exam
organizations.
Definition
 A project is a unique set of coordinated
activities, with definite starting and finishing
points undertaken by an individual or an
organization to meet specific objectives with
defined schedule, cost and performance
parameters.

 A project management is the discipline of

organizing and managing resources in such a
way that these resources deliver all the works
required to complete a project within defined
scope, time and cost constraints.
(British Standards Institution)
2
Characteristics of a Project
1. Has a specific goal.
2. Has a set of different activities to do.
3. Has a definite start and finish date.
4. Consumes resources.
5. Has uncertainty and risk.
6. Unique in some way.

3
Project Life Cycle
1. Defining stage – consists of the inception and
feasibility stages.
2. Planning stage – planning is carried out with
regard to the project scheduling, budget and
quality level desired.
3. Execution stage – the production of physical
product.
4. Delivering stage – completion and handing over of
the project to the owner. This may also include
repair and maintenance activities. The project
cycle is concluded by a demolition or
decommissioning activity.

5
Project Management Objectives

To complete a project on time.

To complete the project within budget.
To complete the project with the desired
quality.

6
Importance of Planning &
Scheduling
To increase project efficiency and performance.
To identify, assess and reduce risks.
To define the sequence of activities to ensure optimum use
of resources.
To provide a framework for decision making in the event of
change.
To assess project cost and whether the project is within
budget.
To know how long the project will take.
To disseminate information to people.
7
Types of Cost in a Project

1. Direct labour cost – cost associated with the wages to

perform a specific work
2. Direct non-labour cost – cost associated with the
material, equipment, transport, sub-contractor, etc.
meant for the specific work
3. Indirect costs – those that cannot be attributed to a
single task of work, such as office rental, utility bills, etc.

8
Techniques for Cost Estimating
1. Expert opinion
2. Analogy estimate
Proposed cost
= Analogous cost x [Proposed capacity / Analogous capacity)]0.7
3. Parametric estimate
Proposed cost = Parameter x “Cost per unit parameter” rate
4. Cost indexing

C2 = C1 x Index1 / Index2
5. Analytical estimating
Cost of project = Σ cost of all elements
9
Project Scheduling

To establish a sequence of work and timeframe for the

performance of construction activities.
To determine when to order and deliver materials and
equipment.
To show the impact of productivity-related problems on
project completion.
To provide a communication tool between consultants,
contractors, owners and suppliers.
To meet contractual obligation.
10
Some General Procedures in Scheduling

1. Establish the project objectives that are to

be achieved
2. Determine work activities and sequencing
3. Determine the activity durations
4. Determine the logical relationships
5. Identify the critical path
6. Implement the schedule

Homework:
 Develop a Gantt chart for your Sustainability project and post it
in your Class Notebook in the Microsoft team.
 You may discuss with your group to do this task.
 You can use 10 weeks of duration. Plan all activities, and
arrange them in the order of your execution over 10 weeks.
 Your chart may be based on activities from Week 2 to week 12
(from Choosing group/title of project-to-project presentation
activities.
 Avoid activities such as sending email, forming WhatsApp
groups, catching a cab to reach campus, etc. in the Gantt chart.
