CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION
This study aims to discuss the affect of used ground coffee on the growth and development of
cucumber. Cucumber plants are planted for their health benefits, such as keeping you hydrated
and lowering blood pressure — thus reducing the risk of heart diseases. Therefore, the used
coffee grounds they use has an effect on its growth and development. Coffee grounds contain
several key nutrients needed by plants. The grounds are rich in nitrogen, making them a great
addition to compost. The researches hopes to discuss which type of used coffee grounds affect
the growth and development of cucumbers the most.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is an annual climbing or spreading vine and common vegetable
grown for its crisp, green fruit. the fruit of a vine of the gourd family that is cultivated as a
garden vegetable and that has diuretic seeds. Ground coffee is roasted coffee beans that have
been ground down to be brewed for coffee, a powder that is finely ground from roasted coffee
beans, taken from the fruits of coffee trees.
The purpose of this study is to look at the effect of different used coffee grounds on the growth
and development of the Cucumber. The researchers will investigate if any type of used coffee
grounds, such as Fine Grind, Medium Grind, Coarse Grind, will affect the cucumber’s plant
growth. The researchers hope to

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study deemed significant to the following:
 Farmers - The used coffee grounds provide a possibility for the cucumbers to develop and
grow. This can result in increased income for farmers in the circumstance that a particular
kind of coffee ground is used to accelerate the growth and development of cucumbers.
 Seller - As the farmers create more income, the sellers have the advantage to offer more
cucumber to the market which causes greater profit for them.
 Consumer - Given that the different types of coffee grounds used have the ability to
improve the nutritional quality of the cucumber plant, the outcome may have a positive
impact on consumer health.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A vital aspect of agriculture that encourages economic growth and food production is the
development of cucumbers. The possible benefits of using coffee grounds in agricultural
activities have brought attention to this procedure. Still up for discussion, is how old coffee
grounds affect the growth and development of cucumber plants.

Evaluating the impact of adding spent coffee grounds to the soil on the growth and development
of cucumber plants is the issue this study attempts to solve. While certain studies and personal
experiences support the benefits of applying coffee grounds in vegetable gardening, conclusive
research that focuses totally on cucumber cultivation is limited.

This research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the influence of varying the use of coffee grounds on the growth and development of
cucumber plants?
2. Does incorporating used coffee grounds into the soil have a positive or negative effect on the
yield of the cucumber?
3.Are there any negative effects, such as soil nutrient imbalance, associated with the used of
coffee grounds on cucumber growth?
4. can different types of coffee brands affect the growth and development of cucumber?
5. Is there a significant relationship between the used coffee grounds and the growth and
development of cucumber?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The focus of this study would be to evaluate the effect of used coffee grounds on the growth and
development of cucumber. The study aims to investigate the Effects of various coffee grounds or
aspects on the general health, growth, and production of cucumber plants. The study may involve
conducting experiments with different types of coffee gounds to monitor the changes in the
growth and development of cucumber plants. Other genetic factors may cause change on the
cucumber plants but they were not included, as they were not the main focus of the study.

METHODOLOGY
This research was conducted using experimental method recognized by its scientific
sophistication. this method involves the observation of phenomena under controlled conditions,
particularly these topics are complex such as steb-by-stepprocedures. in our study, we adopted an
experimental to examine the effects of manipulationg the coffee, representinhg as the
independent variable , on the dependent variable, which pertains the growth and development of
cucumber plant

RESEARCH DESIGN
In order to investigate the impact of spent coffee grounds on the growth and development of
cucumbers, this study will employ a descriptive research approach. This will include carefully
examining and characterizing the features of cucumber plants subjected to various amounts of
used coffee grounds.

In this study, we will investigate the type of coffee grounds we will use for the cucumber plant's
growth and development. Furthermore, we will find out whether the coffee grounds we use have
a negative impact on the plant's growth so that, in any situation that there is, we may replace the
coffee grounds with a new one that is compatible with the growth and development of the
cucumber plant. the IV of our study is the amount of used coffee grounds and for our DV. is the
height of the cucumber plants and the length of the roots
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
In this study, the researchers will only use survey form. This survey form consist of
questionnaires that will respond to the problem stated. The researchers will use 15-item survey
form about the topic. This survey will be given through online therefore it’s not time consuming
and it can be accessed easily.
