TRANSITIONING FROM PALMER

GRASP TO PINCER GRASP

LEGOS
Playing with Legos is a fun and beneficial activity to
help support the palmer-to-pincer transition. Using
Legos increases manual dexterity as it allows repetitive
movements of a firm grasp between the thumb and
fingers and hand-eye coordination.

TWEEZERS
Tweezer activities can be customized to all levels of
development by adjusting the size of the objects being
picked up. Handling tweezers requires a more precise
and steady grip which mimics the similar sensation to
writing with a pencil.

BEADING STRING
Beading string is a creative activity that limits the use of all
five fingers. When beading string children are required to use
a pincer grasp with both hands which allows their non-
dominant hand, which is often deprived of fine-motor
movement, to practice the pincer grasp as well.

STICKER PEELING
Peeling stickers is a fun activity that forces the child to only
use their thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger which are
the three fingers used for a pencil grip.

BROKEN CRAYONS/GOLF PENCILS

Using broken crayons or golf pencils allows children to
practice the act of drawing/writing while using a
pincer grasp. Crayons can be broken to the
appropriate size of the child’s hand in order to restrict
them from using a palmer grasp.
