II. RESPONSIBILITY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

The main purpose of instruction is to promote student learning. This means that faculty direct all matters dealing
with courses. That does not mean that faculty bear sole responsibility for students’ education. Students need to
follow faculty guidance, study, complete homework, and prepare for class to master the information and skills being
taught. Students cannot expect an excellent grade in a course without spending several hours of studying every
week for each hour of scheduled class time. Extra-curricular activities, including jobs, will not affect faculty
expectations and should not interfere with a student’s class preparation.

Faculty will encourage questions and questioning, although students should remember that insight often comes
from struggling with a problem rather than being given the answer. The ultimate responsibility for learning lies with
the student. Pre-class preparation and study is encouraged to help the student to process the rapid delivery of
information and should be the normal practice for nursing students. Although faculty members will teach, guide,
assist, and encourage, learning is the responsibility of the student. Learning is hard work and full-time students
should consider “studenting” to be a full-time job.

VI. GRADING PLAN

To satisfactorily pass Advanced Evidence Based Clinical Reasoning, Nursing 221, the student must meet the
criteria established for theory exams, clinical lab, campus lab, simulations, written assignments, electronic
assignments, and remediation. Failure to meet the criteria in any one of these areas results in failure of the
course. Theory and clinical objectives are evaluated in the classroom, clinical settings, and campus lab. In the
classroom, evaluation may be by paper/pencil tests and/or computerized tests. Evaluation of the student’s
delivery of patient care is documented on the Clinical Evaluation Tool. Skills are validated by lab faculty, course
faculty, and clinical supervisors.

A. Theory:

The course grade is comprised of six 50-item CJE Benchmark Exams, two comprehensive CJE Readiness
Benchmark Exams, and several course assignments. The weighted value of each exam is listed below.
Students cannot progress to the next course with a final grade below a “C” (75%). If clinical performance is
“unsatisfactory” and the theory average is 75% or above, a grade of “D” will be assigned for the course. If
clinical performance is “unsatisfactory” and the theory average is below 75%, a grade of “F” will be assigned
for the course.

NOTE: Student identification is required for ALL tests. Refer to the Testing policy located in the Nursing
Department Student Policy Manual for test day procedures.

Partial credit will NOT be given for assignments. Late or incomplete assignments will receive zero (0) points.

Students are required to attend the NurseThink® NCLEX ReView course as preparation for the Licensure
Examination. The fee for the review course will be paid by students. Dates and times for the ReView course will
be noted on the course calendar.

C. Clinical Performance:

Students will complete clinical/precepting hours in assigned clinical facilities. To successfully progress in the
nursing program, students must earn an overall grade of “2-satisfactory” for the course clinical hours. Description
of the clinical rating scale is located in the Clinical Performance Evaluation section in the Nursing Program
Student Policy Manual. Specific policies are posted in the Precepting Handbook located in BlackBoard.

D. Clinical Failure: see Nursing Department Student Policy Manual

E. Lab/Skill Validation: NUR 221 does not have any skills validations.

F. Simulation:

Attendance at simulations is required for the course. Opportunities exist to participate in simulation experiences
in the campus skills lab. Students are required to participate in all simulations for course completion and as part
of the course grade for NUR 221. Students will be graded on individual performance and will constitute 5% of
their course grade. Students that do not achieve a minimum score of 75 on the graded simulation will be
required to remediate deficiencies that will include additional clinical hours in the acute care setting. Preparation
for a simulation activity may include: drug information sheets, nursing diagnosis or other assignment.
Information related to simulation prep assignment will be posted in Blackboard. Students with incomplete or
missing simulation prep assignments will be disallowed participation in the simulation and remediation work will
be assigned. All simulation absence assignments must be made up at the time designated by faculty to receive
credit for the course. Students will be considered absent if arriving 5 minutes after scheduled simulation start
time. Simulation/Campus laboratory time may be required outside of scheduled classroom hours.

On-campus simulations are required for the course and count as clinical time. Students are required to self-
schedule their simulation using the “Simulation Sign Up Link” in the Simulation Folder of the blackboard course
shell. Simulation time slots are filled on a first come/first serve basis. Extra dates and times will NOT be added
later. Each student may only sign up for one slot. It is the student’s responsibility to remember the chosen
simulation date/time.

The deadline to self-schedule simulations is no later than 2359 on 01/19/2024. Failure to complete this will
result in a professional check. The student will be assigned a simulation date/time of the simulation faculty’s
choosing. Once a student has signed up for simulation, no changes will be made to the schedule unless there is a
change in a student’s clinical grid. Students must ensure when signing up that they are not double booking
themselves with other clinical experiences, class, outside appointments, etc. A professional check will be
awarded if a simulation experience has to be rescheduled for any reason other than illness or a clinical grid
change. Students who do not meet the expected level of performance may be required to remediate and attend
an additional simulation day at the end of the semester. If the student continues to exhibit inadequate
simulation performance, he/she may be required to repeat the course. Refer to the Nursing Department Student
Policy Manual for information related to simulation absences.

VII. GRADING SCALE FOR NURSING

Course grade and unit exams

A = 90 - 100
B = 80 – 89
C = 75 – 79
D = 60 – 74
F = 59 and below
7
Individual exam grades and final course grades are not rounded to the next higher score. For example, if the final
course grade is 89.5, a grade of “B” will be recorded. A grade of 74.7 will be recorded as a “D.” A minimum grade
of “C” in theory (75% or above) and “satisfactory” clinical performance is required to successfully complete a NUR
course.

VIII. Topic Outline

Learning concepts associated with NUR 221 are listed below. Course objectives and topical outline for the course are
congruent with the Alabama College System’s Plans of Instruction.
• Manager of Care
• Professionalism
• Healthcare Delivery System

IX. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

Submission of written and/or electronic assignments is required for all nursing courses. These may include
concept/exemplar-specific assignments, comprehensive assessments, care plans, case studies, and completion of
chapter study guides. Completion of all assignments is required; however, depending on the course grading plan,
the assignments may or may not count for a grade percentage. Written assignments are to be hand-written in
black pen on the forms located on Blackboard and/or in the student handbook. Copies of forms are the
responsibility of the student. Copied forms are to be centered, legible, and only on white paper. Typed work will
not be accepted if the work is assigned as written. These forms are to be considered professional documents and
are to be submitted as such. Student name should be on EACH page submitted. All assignments and exams are to
be the student’s own work. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. See the College Catalog/Student
Handbook for procedures pertaining to the student Code of Conduct, misconduct, and disciplinary actions.

Artificial intelligence is Not Permitted in this Course. In this course, it is expected that all submitted work is produced
by the students themselves, whether individually or collaboratively. Students must not seek the assistance of
Generative AI Tools like ChatGPT. Use of a Generative AI Tool to complete an assignment constitutes academic
dishonesty.

Students should expect to receive feedback on their assignments from the instructor. It is the student’s
responsibility to monitor grading outcomes for faculty feedback. Remember…even grades of 100% may have
feedback attached! Each clinical instructor will designate where and when clinical assignments are to be
submitted and how the student can expect to receive graded papers.

Dates for submission of course work are posted on the course calendar and/or on Blackboard. Late submissions will
result in loss of points on each assignment. Students who fail to complete and submit those assignments denoted as
REQUIRED will not be allowed to take the final exam for the course until all work is submitted. Refer to the Nursing
Department Student Policy Manual.

Students in the last semester of their program of study that have not completed and/or turned in required
coursework prior to the deadline will receive a grade of Incomplete for the course. This results in a delay of
transcript completion and submission to the Alabama Board of Nursing. Transcripts cannot be completed until a
passing letter grade is posted. See course calendar for deadline date for submitting all coursework.

A. Written Assignments for NUR 221:

 vSim Assignments (Guided Reflection Questions) - Upon completion of the assigned virtual
simulation activity (vSim), the student should print off the guided reflection form, label each page
with their name, answer each question thoroughly, then submit into the Blackboard Dropbox.
 Career Fair Networking Assignments (Cover Letter, Resume’ & Letter of Resignation) - Students are
required to complete and submit a cover letter, resume, and a letter of resignation using the format
discussed in class and in the textbook. The completed assignment will be submitted into the
designated Dropbox on Blackboard.
8
 Clinical Judgment Exam (CJE) Remediation - Each course in the nursing program will administer
NurseThink CJEs related to the course’s objectives and areas of instruction. Course faculty determine
the content and version most suitable for the students in each course. Students will be required to
complete more than one (1) CJE per semester. These exams may be proctored (“benchmark”) or non-
proctored (“open”). Remediation is assigned based on student CJE scores and must be completed as
scheduled on the course calendar. All remediation is to be handwritten in black ink. All pages must be
labelled with student and patient names. Specific schedules for CJE testing and remediation are noted
on the course calendar. See the CJE Remediation Policy posted in BlackBoard for detailed information
on score interpretation and process for remediation.

Successful completion of CJE remediation by the due date will result in points being awarded for
each CJE.
• For Open/non-proctored CJEs, the points will be added to the Assignment total.
• For Benchmark/proctored CJEs, remediation points may be added to an exam grade (5
points). Course faculty determine which exam(s) receive remediation points. No more than
10 points may be added to exam grades per semester. If more than two CJE benchmark
exams are given in a course, additional remediation points are awarded as assignment
points.

 Clinical Assignments

• Clinical Prep Assignments may be assigned at the discretion of the instructor. If assigned,
they will be due at the beginning of each day the student attends clinical. Clinical prep
assignments may include but are not limited to PrepU quizzes, journal articles, drug
information sheets, and/or nursing care plans. When care plans are assigned, students are to
include at least five significant strategies written legibly in black ink (not typed).
• During clinical rotations, the clinical supervisor may assign additional required written
assignments. Students should be prepared to complete daily assessments for each clinical
rotation. Therefore, the forms located in BlackBoard should be printed and carried to
clinicals.

B. Electronic Assignments for NUR 221:

 vSim Assignments are virtual clinical scenarios based on exemplars being studied in the course. They
are designed to help the student enhance clinical judgment and critical thinking. The assignments are
listed under the “Assignments” section in BlackBoard along with the expected level of completion.
Deadlines are noted on the course calendar. To obtain full points for the assignment, the student must
attain a score of 90% or higher on EACH portion of the vSims (pre- and post-quizzes, simulation, SBAR,
guided reflection questions).

 Adult Comprehensive Assessment (REQUIRED) on your assigned capstone simulation patient.

Additional guidelines are posted on Blackboard, but the comprehensive assessment includes:
o Completion of the Adult Comprehensive Assessment via DocuCare.
o A physiological care plan/problem-based care plan developed on the most significant issue you
have identified for the patient.

3. Home Health Reflective Paper – The student will reflect on care situations where patients are
challenged to maintain their dignity and self-worth to include experiences with end-of-life care
focusing on communication techniques and the nursing care role. Specific guidelines are posted on
Blackboard.

4. Discussion Board Assignment – The students will engage in group discussions that focus on topics
based on the concept of “Manager of Care.” The discussion board is an essential platform for fostering
meaningful discourse on healthcare management. Active and insightful engagement is highly
encouraged, with an emphasis on contributions that exemplify thoughtfulness, professionalism, and
9
critical thinking. Participation in these discussions will contribute to a deeper understanding of care
management principles, enriching the overall learning experience. Specific guidelines regarding the
discussion board assignment are posted on Blackboard.

C. Clinical Assignments for NUR 221:

 Preceptorship Experiences: 156 hours

 Emergency Department (ED) Clinical Rotation: 18 hours
 Home Health Experiences: 8 hours

X. FINAL EXAM: Attendance at the final examination is mandatory.

The date and time of the final exam will be included on the course calendar and/or announced on Blackboard. Any
student who must miss a final has the responsibility to make arrangements with the Program Coordinator to take the
final examination on an alternate date.

Students arriving any time after the start of the final exam will be allowed/required to test in the remaining exam
time. No make-up exams will be administered. No rescheduling to a later seating of the same exam. Missed final
exams are recorded with a grade of “0” without prior written request.

MAKEUP EXAMS:

Students are required to contact the Course Leader and the nursing department secretary in advance if unable to
attend class on a scheduled test date, due to illness or emergency circumstances. Students may make up only two
tests per semester in all enrolled nursing courses. Students will take all make up tests on the assigned make-up test
day. All make up tests will be completed by the last day of classes for that semester. The test day policy will be in
effect on make-up test day and student identification is required. The format of unit make-up exams will be at the
discretion of the course instructor.

XI. ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance policies of the Nursing Department are commensurate with those of the College as stated in the CCC
Catalog and Student Handbook. Students are required to attend all classes for which they are registered. Each
student should accept academic responsibilities for successful completion. Nursing students are expected to:
• Attend all scheduled classroom/lab/virtual sessions for their entirety.
• Attend all scheduled clinical learning experiences and meet the required course hours.
• Be present for campus laboratory sessions for skills practice and validation.
• Be punctual. Tardiness is considered unprofessional behavior.
• Students are expected to activate their video cameras for any virtual meetings/classes.

When a student exceeds the maximum allowed non-excused absences for a course, the instructor has the authority
to administratively withdraw the student from the course or make other adjustments to the student’s grade as
outlined in the course syllabus. Students will be notified of the administrative withdrawal by their instructor via
their Calhoun e-mail account.

A. Class Attendance

Nursing students are required to attend class. Attendance will be taken at each class meeting via a roster sign-
in sheet or QR code. Sign-in sheets may be distributed at any time during a scheduled class, and it is the
responsibility of the student to document their attendance by signing the class roll. Signing the class roll for
another student is dishonest and the individual will be subject to the CCC Student Code of Conduct and
Disciplinary Procedures. The maximum allowed non-excused absences in the classroom is two times the
number of class meetings per week. NUR 221 meets once a week, so two absences are allowed.

10
B. Clinical Attendance/Absence

Clinical rotation attendance is mandatory. Failure to complete the required clinical hours in a nursing course
will result in a clinical failure and will require application for reinstatement into the nursing program. No more
than one (1) clinical absence is allowed. Absence in excess of one (1) clinical day will result in clinical failure.
Due to the limited availability of clinical experiences, clinical make-up days will not be scheduled. Refer to the
Nursing Student Policy Manual for policies on clinical attendance. Students who are precepting or in the
Apprentice Program should follow the attendance policies as outlined in the respective handbooks.

C. Let’s Pretend Hospital

Students are required to attend “Let’s Pretend Hospital” (LPH) dates as scheduled during the spring semesters.
LPH is a service-learning community project that helps to educate first grade students in principles of
handwashing, infection control, fire safety, terms associated with hospitalization, and potential experiences
associated with access to healthcare. Nursing students are expected to follow the clinical attendance guidelines
for scheduled LPH dates. Absences from LPH will be rescheduled. Makeup assignment(s) and/or other clinical
experiences will be assigned at the discretion of the faculty.
