Background

Starting in 2021,it was announced that learners are required to write a summary in the Grade 7 final examination.
Summary writing is an important skill that students will use through out their academic careers.
It also improves reading skills as learners are able to pick out important ideas of a reading and this helps with vocabulary skills as students are
able to paraphrase a reading as well as alter the vocabulary used.However,most learners are facing challenges in summary writing.

THE CALA

The CALA has two separate parts,Part A and B.You need to complete both parts.

Part A

-Using the internet and any related literature ,research on summary writing,it's importance and things to consider when writing a summary.
-As part of your research,list key questions that you want to find facts about,and note sources for this information.Also,as you gather this
information,write notes about the facts associated with summary writing,it's importance as well as things to consider when writing a summary.

-You can write your questions,sources and notes on the student worksheet.
-When you have finished doing your research,submit your research to your teacher for marking.

PartB

-Choose an article of your choice from a newspaper,magazine or journal and read it.Use the facts that you researched in Part A to prepare and
present your 80-word summary.
-You will present your summary with a cutting of the article that you have Summarise to your teacher on the stated date for marking

How you will be assessed

-To assess your summary,your teacher will assess both your research evidence in Part A and your written summary with it's article cutting in
Part B.
-Achievement standards specific to this CALA will be provided so that you are aware of the assessment criteria.

CALA Tips

-You may choose an article with content you understand and that is not too long or too short to be summarised.
-Before you write your summary,you may think about key elements of“good”summary that you are aware of and use them.
-Remember to bring your researched facts,the article you Summarise and your summary to your teacher for marking

article that you have summarized.(20)

How you will be assessed

The CALA will be assessed out of 50.The facilitator will assess:
- your questions.
- your notes
- notes from interviews.
- the cutting and summary.
