HISTORY OF COMMUNITY

HISTORY OF BARANGAY CUTA

(Based on the story of G. Cipriano Aguila and the analysis of G. Nestor Bonifacio - 1998)

During the Spanish era, Barrio Cuta was the main residence of the powerful
Spaniards. At the western end of the Barrio, the main barracks of the Spanish soldiers
were built, probably because it was very close to the port of their ships. Almost at the
eastern end of Barrio Cuta, the main catholic church was built which served as the home
of influential friars. Because of this, the Barrio became famous and known as the main
fortress of the Spaniards because the Barrio served as the Moog or Defense Area of the
Spanish Government. This was the reason or origin of his name "Cuta" until it
completely became a simple community. There were only a few people living in the
Barrio at that time, the vast lands were owned by the Spanish mestizo families such as
Pastor, Aguila, Trillanes, Palacio and De Jesus which were farmed by the people of the
Barrio.

Seeing the Venerable Sto. Niño during the time of the Spaniards while it was riding
on a trunk of a tree and drifting down the river of Cuta is considered the most colorful
and the most important part of the history not only of the Cuta community but also of the
entire City. This is the basis of holding the Batangas City Festival every January 16th.
The boating and decision in Mahal na Poong Sto. Niño in the Bay of Batangas on this
day of the Festival is in memory of the aforementioned event.

Cuta became a full-fledged barangay in 1973, with the decree issued by president
Marcos and the Sangguniang Barangay Cuta began to be established whose leaders
are elected by ballot. It was also in the 70s when the City's New Market was built on the
Pastor Family's land which is also covered by Barangay Cuta. The opening of the
aforementioned Bagong Palengke signaled a massive change in the face of Barangay
Cuta. The main occupation of farming and fishing has been replaced by
entrepreneurship and employment. The former vast farmlands planted with trees and
vegetables have suddenly been replaced by commercial and residential buildings. Only
the land of the Quinio and Suarez clans remained farmland and vegetable gardens, The
former dams or embankments were replaced by roads and the only provincial road that
penetrates the entire Barangay was increased. Because of this, transportation and
communication became easy due to the increase of public vehicles going in and out of
the Barangay.. In sum, the former image of the rural Barrio gradually took the form of an
Urban Barangay.

Currently, Barangay Cuta is fully an Urban Barangay. It can now be considered a

unique Barangay where the main institutions or institutions lacking in a prosperous town
can be found. The Provincial Jail (dungeon) Batangas City New Public Marke is here!
(market), harbor for small boats, Quezon Memorial Stadium (playground), beach resort
(Tallonghari Beach Resort), different levels of schools, churches of different religions or
sects and even commercial stores, restaurant , lodge/inn, and others. At the same time
as the growth of said development, the management and lifestyle of the people became
very complicated due to the worsening of its ecological and social problems.
