Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Body language displays an individual’s attitudes, emotions and feelings. It can be shown by such things
as folded or relaxed arms, eyes contact, relaxed posture, fidgeting and gesturing warmly. It is important for two
reasons. First, people are most likely to remember what they see than what they hear, and, second, people can
lie with words, but not with their body language or facial expressions, as most people make them
unconsciously.
With positive body language, there is a link between our interest in the other person and the conversation.
It is also very reliable in revealing a person’s feelings. For instance, if your arms are relaxed, it is a sign of
openness. Gesturing or “talking” with your hands shows involvement in the conversation and frankness
towards the other person. Other examples are putting what you want to say into words with a smile and adding
humour, as this indicates a warm and personal relationship.
Negative body language can be related to feeling uncomfortable. Negative body language is not as
reliable a guide as positive body language. Fidgeting, for example, can be a signal of boredom, nervousness, or
impatience. Shaking your head or yawning can also be signals of boredom or confusion.
To maintain positive body language, it is best to put into practice the art of maintaining good posture and
eye contact. Establishing eye contact, nodding for agreement and smiling can make people feel at ease and can
be good starting point for healthy relationship.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with
knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-culture communication. Americans, however, have not been
well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an
international arena as have their foreign counterpart.
Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It
involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand
the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation.
In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It
often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multimillion-dollar corporation that
can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an
impersonal purveyor or information and cash, an image that succeeds only in undermining the negotiation.
In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been indentified that may serve to confirm this
stereotypical perception, while subverting the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-
culture misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of American negotiator. Furthermore,
American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may
value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term
benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time
involved in getting to know the other negotiator.
Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of
negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put
forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding.
