Rising sea temperatures are causing hurricanes to stay for longer, researchers have found, with the

Wildfires have swept across the West Coast of America this year with devastating consequences.
Burning millions of acres of land in their wake, the fires have not just done great harm to forest, but could
have a long-lasting impact on numerous wildlife species too.
The biggest effect wildfires have on wildlife habitats is by altering the three key things that
animals need to survive: food, water, and shelter.
“Tender understory plants and shrubs that provide food are lost, and this loss often results in

“When large animal mortality does occur, it is usually from smoke inhalation in very large, very

Small mammals and many birds leave their habitat, while reptiles can avoid the direct effect by
burrowing into the soil. It’s the larger animals with limited mobility that live above ground who are most
vulnerable to fire-caused injury and death.
Fish and other aquatic organisms can find themselves without any livable habitat at all, as runoff
from fires impact water chemistry, rendering lakes and ponds unlivable. Fish moving away or even dying
off following fires are not uncommon.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW), it is too early to say just how
this year’s 17 fires in the state will have impacted fish and wildlife populations. One blaze alone – the
Lionshead Fire – burned more than 200,000 acres, and some fires continue to burn. “ODFW will be
assessing the impact in the coming week, and it will be lessened by immediate actions” a statement from
the department said.

The term “science communication” is not universal. For 50 years, what is called “science
communication” has had different names such as “public understanding” or “popular science”. Each
name defines how science and society link with each other. Is science a part of society? Is it held in high
esteem?

In the UK, in 1985, the Royal Society’s Report argued that scientists should consider it their duty
to communicate their work to the citizens. In general, there is always an expectation that researchers will
contribute to the development of society. In other words, science is for the public good. An established
principle across Europe is an expectation or obligation that researchers will contribute to the growth,
welfare and development of society. Universities are expected to exchange knowledge and skills with
others in society and encouraging public debate. Medical doctors explain the situations to patients in
simple languages that people with a non-scientific background can understand. A physicist should not
serve a bunch of difficult questions to the audience. Instead, she should explain in human language, for
example what gravity is about, what a black hole is,... All examples of science communication leave the
audience with a sense of inclusion to the scientific community and not exclusion from it, similar to how a
patient ideally should feel when leaving the medical doctor’s office.
A science communicator is someone who bridges the gap between the science and the public.
They can be active scientists who engage in science communication additionally to their research and the
active communicators, who are not researchers but have a background in science and spend their time
explaining to the public. Both groups play an important role in science communication. Especially at this
present time it’s challenging to be a science communicator. The current pandemic, climate crisis, and
concerns over artificial intelligence demand public accountability, clear discussion and the ability to agree
and disagree in public. Additionally, the increased online commercial focus to appeal to our emotions in
order to get votes or sell a product makes it more important than ever before to communicate
enthusiastically and openly about science. Without effective communication, government will slowly but
surely shut down public research institutions. And nobody wants a science institution to do research on,
let say, obesity if it is funded by the pharmaceutical industry.
