Creating a sophisticated map for the 11 Geography FIA3 – SA2

1. Login to ArcGIS
a. User: EQusername_TBAYGEO
b. Password: The passport you set, otherwise ask the teacher to reset it.
i. Reset password:
1. Copy the temporary password from the ArcGIS email sent after the teacher reset the
password.
2. Paste the temporary password in the current password box
3. Enter a new password which is different from your old ones and contains a number
and character.
2. Click Map from the top menu

3. Your map should look like this:

4. Go to ArcGIS > click Add > click “browse layers” > change “My Content” to “ArcGIS Online”.
5. Search “SA2” to find any ABS data linked to the SA2 statistical level. I chose to show personal weekly income
by sex from 2016.

6. Zoom into Cairns.


7. Click “styles” on the right.
8. Click + Field..
9. Search and add a field you want to show. I have chosen to show median weekly family income.
10. Change the Counts and Amounts (size) to Counts and Amounts (colour) so it is a choropleth map.

11. Click “style options”.


a. Click symbol style and give the shapes and outline colour. Black is best.
b. Change the symbol style to a choropleth map colour scale.
c. Put the fill transparency up a bit so you can read the suburb labels.
12. Click classify data > the legend will now automatically find the natural breaks. Add more breaks if you want.

13. Click Properties > Symbology > ensure “show in map legend” is checked on.
14. Zoom out so you have most of Cairns showing like below.
15. If you haven’t already, save your map to your ArcGIS database.

16. Click More > Print.

17. Printing the final map as a PDF. For a map with BOLTSS do the following:
a. File format PDF
b. Choose the page setup which best suits your map. Cairns is linear so is best for an A3 portrait map.
c. A title which clearly states what is shown on the map.
d. Click advanced options
i. Click include legend and include north arrow.
ii. Add your full name as an author to show you created it.
e. Click export.
f. Click the exported PDF down the bottom.
g. Save the PDF with the same name as your map title.
18. Open your PDF, use the snipping tool and snip it into your assignment.
19. Analyse the map in your data analysis section.
20. Save your ArcGIS file.
