Singular and Plurals

Nouns which refer to a single person or thing are singular nouns while nouns
which refer to more than one person or thing are plural nouns.

There are different ways in which nouns make their plurals.

Examples

• Addition of ‘s’

Teacher Teachers
Table Tables
Girl Girls

• Nouns ending in s, x, ch and sh form their plurals by adding es

Bus Buses
Fox Foxes
Bush Bushes
Stitch Stitches

• Nouns that end in y, usually change y to i and add es

Country Countries
Diary Diaries
Factory Factories

• But if the letter before the y is a vowel, simply add s.

Journey Journeys
Chimney Chimneys
Pulley Pulleys

• Some nouns which end in f form their plurals by changing f to v and

adding es.

Scarf Scarves
Calf Calves
Wolf Wolves

• However, some do not obey this rule. e.g

Handkerchief Handkerchiefs
Gulf Gulfs
Hoof Hoofs

• Some nouns change several letters to make their plural.
