Wordcraft Mastery: Transforming

Vocabulary into Fluency

In the journey of mastering a language, being fluent doesn’t just mean knowing a lot of
words. But knowing exactly when to use it. Just like vocabulary you have just studied, it will
quickly fly away, and you will forget it. So, how do we learn a new word? Well, to effectively
learn and ‘know’ a new word, you need to :

1. Understand the meaning, understand what the words actually refers to

2. Know the form, get familiar with how the word looks like
3. Be able to pronounce it, get familiar with how the word spelled and pronounced
sounds
4. Knowing how to use it, knowing how to use the word correctly, in what situations and
what forms you can use the word in different grammatical structures.
5. Exploring contexts, see it in 3 or 4 different situations or scenarios. observe the word
to get the flexibility and appropriate to use
6. Use it in 3 or 4 contexts, incorporate the word correctly in sentences or in
conversations. Making it more likely to stick in your memory and become a part of
your active vocabulary.

By following these steps, you are on the way to really ‘knowing’ a new word. However,
learning vocabulary and new grammatical structures is a long-term process. The key to
learning a new language is to review, review and review.
