REVIEW OF MONSTER CHALLENGE STORY: AN INTRODUCTION

The title of this story is “Monster Challenge” and authored by Olly Richards in his book which
is English Short Stories for Intermediate Learners. The genre of this story is supernatural and
fantasy tale. In my point of view, the storylime of this story is original creation by the author
but the characters are drawn from earlier published science fiction, historical figure and gothic
stories. For example, there are character of this story is Count Dracula which is the character
of the gothic tale titled "Dracula” by Bram stroker in the year of 1897, then character of
Wagner, The Werewolf written by George W. M. Reynolds in 1846 followed by Griffin, The
Invisible Man which is science fiction character by HG. Wells in his work and The Pharaoh
that known as ancient Egypt rulers back in the days.

Furthermore, the main character of this tale is the Dracula, Wagner, The Werewolf and
Griffin, The Invisible Man that I mentioned earlier. These three characters exhibit different
characteristics and features where the Dracula is the oldest vampires as the boss of the
monsters, having numerous skills and secret capabilities. The Dracula also described as
having dark red lips and a pale white face. Meanwhile, Griffin, The Invisible Man is a human
named Doctor Griffin that made a potion that turned himself invisible and is someone who
intelligent combined with his vision and ambitious traits in achieving his goals. Lastly, Wagner,
The Werewolf known for his impatience and excellent sense of smell, particularly in relation to
humans, as the character claims that humans have an extremely horrible smell.

This Monster Challenge story takes place in a little Virginia forest with a lot of hills and
woods, making it a perfect spot for monsters to live there. The main theme of this story can be
moral allegory. This can be proven by the scene in chapter 2 of the story where Griffin being
insulted and despise by Dracula for being a human instead of a monster and he is judging
Griffin to be weaker than him according to his great monster skills. According to that, Griffin
stoof up for himself and ask Dracula to compete to prove that he is not dumb and powerless
as he thought. Thus, The reader gets a lesson through this story not to underestimate the
capabilities of others and not to be cocky about one's own abilities. In my opinion, the story
itself intrigues myself due to the fact that I have never come across a fictional story unlike this
in the past.

SUMMARY

This book is about the monsters which is Dracula and Griffin, The Invisible Man that had a
challenge to compete who is the smartest among them. It all started in Dracula’s mansion in
Virginia when Griffin and Wagner had a conversation about Griffin’s obsession in taking over
the world and assumed that all the monster need to be smarter plus being better organized.
Wagner, The Werewolf, on the other hand, believe that most monsters don't care about
power as Griffin's ideas and desires are irrelevant to him. Then, Dracula unexpectedly
interrupted them and seemed interested in what was going on and they explained to him that
they were talking about foolish monsters.

This is where it all started as Dracula refuses to accept that other monsters are brighter
than him and despises abilities of others especially Griffin, The Invisible Man according to the
fact that he is simply a human being who cannot be seen. They afterwards argued about who
is smarter, and Dracula stated that he is the most intelligent among all and monsters are
stupid, but they are totally smarter than humans in chapter 2. Therefore, Griffin felt insulted
and challenged Dracula into a contest to prove who is smarter among them. Later on, they
had a Monster Meet-Up and Griffin explained the rule of his challenges to Dracula to the other
monsters. He had always wanted to be the next monster leader, and here was his big
chance!

Finally, Griffin ordered the monsters to construct two identical traps, with only one way
out and none of them knowing it. So Zara, the witch from the east, and her fellow witches built
two massive black boxes, with just one tiny hole left open for a person to climb inside and no
way out. Then, as soon as possible, they begin the challenge. After all the monsters gathered
to watch, Griffin and Dracula can be seen entering each box. The boxes eventually got
pushed into a swamp in the last chapter. The plot caught my interest since the Dracula
character annoys me, and I'm wondering who would get declared the most clever among
them. The story's ending was excellent, an idea I did not expect.

PERSONAL REVIEW

As a result, Griffin, The Invisible Man, is my favorite character in the tale because he is brave
enough to stand up for himself and believe in his own abilities to achieve what he desires. As
an example, in Chapter 2, he challenges Dracula to see if the dumbest human is smarter than
the smartest monster in response to Dracula's belittles. In addition, I enjoy the way that
Wagner, the Werewolf—one of the smartest and toughest monsters—never took sides and
never insulted the other monsters. He also thought that the Pharaoh was a creature with
potential to be a good monster. This story also lightened up by his character as he adds a
draw to every aspect of the plot and respects his boss while still having the courage to speak
up his points of view. As an example, in chapter 1, Wagner tries to play a practical joke on
Griffin by turning out the lights since he has trouble seeing in the dark and uses his analogy to
explain how annoying it is for him to be unable to see Griffin.

In my point of view, the author has succeeded in his writing purpose because it teaches
us, as readers, not to disregard the abilities of others as we never know what they are
capable of beyond what we are capable of. Overall, I would recommend in reading this tale to
person who likes to read a fantasy and supernatural tale yet a twisted and unexpected ending.
In addition, readers can get to know the characters and conduct some research to learn more
about their pasts and backgrounds. In this context, readers can learn about The Pharaoh and
his significance in history as the ruler of ancient Egypt back then. For this story, I would rate it
as 8 out of 10 because it is an interesting story filled with magical and supernatural elements
in addition to the hilarious ending—which I will not reveal since I don't want to ruin it for
anyone.
