ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 6

A. Project Title:
PROPOSED UNIVERSITY OF BATANGAS NASUGBU CAMPUS
B. Statement of the Problem:
It was in early 1946 that Mr. Juan Y. Javier and Atty. Jesus Lorenzo A. Arguelles decided to open a school. Their
decision was borne out of their desire to open a school that will provide for the educational needs of Batangueños, especially
those who were eager to study but could not afford the high cost of education in Manila. In order to realize this vision, they
invited other prominent people who had the same vision and can heartily share their own personal resources to help start this
important undertaking.
True to its mission, UB provides opportunities for students to strengthen their faith in God, uplift their love of wisdom,
and heighten their concern to serve their fellowmen, such principles that guide the UBinians in the conduct as they go about
their daily lives. Continuously innovating its offerings in the field of Engineering, Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy,
Liberal Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Technical Education help the academic community to manage global trends
in education, thereby producing competitive and employable graduates. Student involvement is encouraged in collaborative
programs to mould future leaders who are empowered by the core values learned in school. Active participation in academic,
sports and cultural competitions foster sportsmanship, fairness and grace under pressure. The students learn resourcefulness,
critical-thinking, creativity, skills competitiveness and responsibility.
With the sustained growth of the institution, the vision to expand further is now on the planning table. The project seeks
to transcend the architectural limits imposed by the current institutional model, paving a new framework for a leap; from linear
to an organic structure of education. The architectural scheme is the proposition of open spaces. This is a new infrastructural
framework that lays foundation to the future learning environment. The intervention seeks to unify the existing University identity
and, at the same time, signify the aspirations towards the future of learning. This process would take place in the following (but
not limited) considerations.
1. Undulating land forms seek to create a public space that responds to the natural environment of the surrounding
landscape. The subtle program distances itself spatially but stays visually connected to the busy university life
along its perimeter. The integration of the roof unifies the university as a single element while providing a
framework which allows for a customizable system in the future.
2. With the introduction of new technologies and the ever-evolving learning environment; we need spaces that could
accommodate for current learning typologies but also future learning environments. Spaces would then need to
be highly adaptable and flexible. Inhabitation of the “new” building will be more sustainable and cost effective.
3. A built-in infrastructure which accommodates the demand of flexible physical and digital spaces shall be
introduced. To accommodate flexible unplanned usage of spaces, resources need to be readily available and
customizable for future users of the space.
This ambitious proposal will reposition and reinvent University of Batangas’ role in the future of higher-education
learning in the Philippines. The open learning spaces will be an iconic symbol for the university. It breathes life into the existing
historical and cultural vessels surrounding landscape.
