THE PERSON WE ARE GOING
TO BE TALKING ABOUT IS:

Marrie Curie
WHAT WAS SHE MOST KNOWN FOR?
Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium
and polonium, and her huge contribution to finding
treatments for cancer. This work continues to inspire our
charity's mission to drive fundamental change in end of
life care so that everyone can have the best possible quality
of life to the end.
EARLY LIFE OF MARIE CURIE
Maria Sklodowska (later Curie), born 1867 in Poland, faced
hardship early. Despite family losses and political struggles,
she excelled in science thanks to her father's guidance.
Unable to attend university due to her gender, she joined
the underground "Flying University" to pursue her
intellectual passion. This concise summary captures the key
aspects of her early life and the obstacles she overcame.
AWARDS GIVEN TO
MARRIE CURIE
IN 1903, CURIE WON THE NOBEL PRIZE IN
PHYSICS FOR HER RESEARCH OF
RADIATION PHENOMENA. SHE WAS ALSO
THE FIRST WOMAN IN FRANCE TO ATTAIN
A PHD IN PHYSICS, AND THE FIRST
WOMAN TO TEACH AT THE SORBONNE. IN
1911, SHE WON A SECOND NOBEL PRIZE IN
CHEMISTRY FOR THE DISCOVERY OF
POLONIUM AND RADIUM.
WHO INSPIRED MARRIE CURIE
Henri Becquerel

The 1896 discovery of radioactivity

by Henri Becquerel inspired Marie
and Pierre Curie to further
investigate this phenomenon. They
examined many substances and
minerals for signs of radioactivity.
