About Us
Mission
As a University-based publishing, XU Press plays a role in
publishing instructional materials pertinent to the academic
curricula and books that address the knowledge gaps in the
region. This latter role, in view of the scarcity of publishing
outfits in the region, has made XU Press vital in promoting
awareness of Mindanao to the bigger world.
In fulfilling its vision and mission, the Press will be guided by
the following principles.
BRIDE PRICE AND OTHER STORIES
BY CALBI ANJI ASAIN
The characters’ demeanors in this collection mirror the social forces taking place in their midst,
the most devastating of which was the war between Tausug revolutionaries and the government
in the 1970's and the biases and prejudices, real or imagined, against them by mainstream
detractors.
Their struggle for identity and recognition has enabled them to mingle with other Filipinos as they
engage themselves in education, politics, and other social processes. Such processes likewise
make and unmake the Tausugs in their homeland and society in transition.
Calbi Anji Asain holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Philippine Studies specializing in Anthropology,
History, and Philippine literature. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in English summa cum laude
from the Notre Dame of Jolo College (NDJC) and his Master of Arts in English from the University
of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

SIKWATENG UWAN
BY JEENA RANI MARQUEZ AND MARIA ELENA PAULMA
The authors tell their own Sendong stories articulating the twin themes of courage and fear,
of waiting and renewal. The festive images of Christmas tinsel and trees contrast the themes
of life and light with that of loss and darkness. The image of the rain and river picks up the
same themes in the transforming context of time and memory. Mud and water brings forth
life and death, and healing.
Jeena Rani Marquez is a Palanca award-winning author She has undergone training in research, winning, and
teaching in London, Norwich, and Manchester. She is also the author of Beyond Words (Pahiwatig ng Lambing),
The River of Gold, and the co-author of The Night that Changed the River.
Maria Elena Paulma specialized in Creatve Writing and Comparative Literature at UP Diliman where she
earned all her degrees. Her short story “Three Kisses” won the First Prize in the 2010 Palanca Awards.
LASANG SA MGA PASUMBINGAY:
SIXTEEN SOUTHERN WRITERS
EDITIED BY MERLIE ALUNAN
Anthology | Copyright 2023
ISBN 978-971-9094-37-1
152.4mm x 228.6mm | 431 pages
This is a fine testament to the continuing vitality of so-called “regional literatures.” All too
often, the “regional” is associated with what is parochial, divisive, localist, vernacular. The
sixteen young Visayan writers gathered in this volume demolish such notions. While bound
by a deep sense of home and place, they are in no way “provincial.” They are multilingual,
mobile, open to the world, highly literate, and very contemporary. Let this book be a tribute
as well to the widely esteemed poet and teacher who made this book possible, Merlie M.
Alunan, mother and mentor to young Visayan writers.
—RESIL B. MOJARES, National Artist for Literature
Merlie M. Alunan is Professor Emeritus of the UP Tacloban College and author of several anthologies on
Visayan Literature. She was the convenor of the UPVTC Centennial Creative Writing Workshop which produced
