STUDY OBJECTIVE

‘‘Data is the new oil,’’ truer world couldn’t have been spoken in today’s world. This quote is
from the founder of Dunnhumby, Clive Humby, a Data Scientist that I admire. The world is
experiencing its 4th industrial revolution, commonly known as Industry 4.0, and not all the
countries are following the revolution at the same pace, and my country the Republic of Congo
is far behind.

At the center of Industry 4.0, there are smart or intelligent objects communicating with each
other via internet. This communication is mainly data exchange, data transfer, data-based
decisions, and more data generated. This is where Cloud computing intervenes.
However, some countries in the world, third-world countries in general and the Republic of
Congo, my home country, are lacking competencies in Cloud Computing. As a Systems
Engineer at the Agence Congolaise des Systemes d’Information, I do experience first-hand this
lack in my daily work. Not only will cloud computing alleviate some workload but it will also
allow my country to stay on track with the advancements of technologies and comply to the
standards of the modern world.

Africa has so much potential that is yet to explore and the Republic of Congo, because of its
geographic position, could offer more in terms of Cloud computing. With the access to the
Atlantic, we are an entry point. My main objective is to act for the vulgarization of cloud
computing in my country. I plan to help it become a cloud player; a position that will allow us
to store our data in African territory; This project could be extended to the entire African
continent. The pricing will obviously be cheaper for similar if not better security options than
giants like Google or Amazon. This is a challenge I am willing to take up.

The applications of cloud are not only limited to the field of computer science. As a matter of
fact, cloud computing saw its applications in medical fields, accounting, and manageme nt.
Gaining skills in cloud will make me a more flexible engineer, allowing me to work and grow
in another area. Thus, I will be able to help my country develop. De plus, la principale force de
l’ingénierie est la polyvalence. So, with my background in electronics and telecommunicatio n,
pursuing a master’s degree in cloud computing will be a step forward in my career.
Upon completion of my degree in the United States of America, I am planning to open a center
where everyone, especially young people, from different backgrounds can come and learn about
software engineering and cloud computing. The more Congolese youth will be trained in these
fields, the faster my country The Republic of Congo will catch up with the rest of the world.
I am particularly interested in empowering women and inspiring them to pursue careers in new
technologies.

PERSONNAL STATEMENT

Immersed in the world of computers since my early childhood with a computer engineer as father, I
learned very early the basics of Windows administration and office automation. My destiny as a computer
engineer already seemed to be all mapped out. Upon graduating from high school, I did not second guess
which College I would apply to for my academic training. I prepared for the entrance exam and got through
the National Polytechnic College to study Electronics and Telecommunications.

Throughout my curriculum I found a particular interest in automatism and automation. These subjects
really helped me understand which branch of Engineer I would pursue for my Master’s degree, the design
engineering and the control engineering. This vision was reinforced by the benefit of the computer science
classes in the curriculum. Up until that, I had learned the basics of programming. Thanks to those classes,
I developed a passion for problem-solving and critical thinking. The idea of converting a problem’s solution
into lines of code, and the satisfying feeling of solving real-world problems using computers, removed the
remaining doubts, if only there were any, about my career choice.

I did my undergrads in Electronics and Telecommunications. For my final project, I worked on the
implementation of an information system for the predictive maintenance of uninterruptible power
supplies (UPS). This project brought life to the theoretical knowledge I had in power electronics and
networking. The application of the end result of this projected was to help UPS users to get notifications
of the state of their equipment no matter where they could possibly be.

Upon graduating from undergrad school, I could not help myself from enrolling in the master’s program
immediately. Unfortunately for me, towards the begin of the second year of my master’s program, I went
through a deep crisis which led to depression. My academic journey was then interrupted, and my healing
process lasted two years. However, after I overcame depression, I came back stronger than ever. I picked
up my study where I left off, and graduated in Telecommunications from the National Polytechnic College
with honors. I chose to work on the design of elementary logic gates based on optical fibers for my thesis.

Today, I am working as a system engineer at the Congolese Agency of Information Systems (ACSI), and
from what I have experienced so far, companies in this area in particular, and my country in general are
lacking well trained engineers. I am currently working on an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) project,
a web application for a client that my section has been tasked to deploy in Docker; a technology that is
revolutionizing cloud hosting. Being used to rough deployments on virtualization environments such as
VMWARE, we had to respond to this imperative, but our obvious lack of expertise cannot be denied. This
reality made me aware of the need for us to keep up with the technological advances in the IT field. That
is why I am applying for a master’s degree in cloud computing. I want to expand my skills with the ability
to set up infrastructures capable of hosting any web or mobile software solutions designed. My goal is to
become a skilled engineer, able to help my nation to grow by providing the necessary expertise to
become an actor of cloud computing in Africa; a skilled engineer that will be able to help my
country to emerge in the field of computer science. I also believe that becoming a specialist in this field
will eventually open me the doors of the CFI-CIRAS, a high training center of the Republic of Congo where
I plan to share my knowledge and experience with the next generation of IT engineers.
