Exercise 16 (Properties of sequences) (4+(3+3) points)

(a) Which of the following assertions are true? Justify correct ones and give a counter example for each
incorrect assertion.
(i) If a real sequence is monotone and bounded, then it converges.
(ii) If a real sequence converges, then it is monotone and bounded.
(iii) If a complex sequence is not bounded, then it is not convergent.
(iv) If a real sequence is not monotone, then it is not convergent.
(b) Let the sequences (an )n and (bn )n be defined by:
n3 + n2 + 3n + 1
an = n2 + 1, , n ∈ N.
bn =
n4 + n2 − 3
Compute the first 4 terms of each sequence. Which of the sequences are bounded? Justify your answer.
Exercise 17 (Real sequences) (4+3+3 points)
Compute the limit of each of the following sequences, if it exists.

an = 1 + √ + i− , bn = n , cn = .

Exercise 19 (Fibonacci sequence) (5+5 points)

The Fibonacci sequence (Fn )n is defined as F0 := 1, F1 := 1 and Fn := Fn−1 + Fn−2 for n ≥ 2. You can
assume without a proof that the following limit exists
Fn
L = lim .
n→∞ Fn−1

(a) Show that 1 ≤ Fn

Fn−1 ≤ 2 for all n ∈ N.
(b) Determine the limit L.
Exercise 20 (Recursive sequence) (2+3+5 points)
Let a, b ∈ R. Consider the recursive sequence (an ) given by
a0 := a, a1 := b, an := 12 (an−1 + an−2 ) for n ≥ 2.
(a) State the first five terms of the sequence.
( )k−1
(b) Prove by induction that ak − ak−1 = − 12 (b − a) for all k ∈ N.
(c) Use (b) to show that the sequence (an ) converges and determine the limit.
Hint: Introduce a telescopic sum for an − a.
