ALGEBRA NOTES

1. Variables and Constants:

 Variables represent unknown quantities.

 Constants are specific known values.

2. Expressions:

 Combinations of variables, constants, and

operations (+, -, *, /).
 Examples: 2x + 3, 5y - 7, 4x^2 - 9.

3. Equations:

 Statements of equality between expressions.

 Solve by finding values that make the equation
true.
 Example: 2x + 5 = 11 → x = 3.

4. Simplifying Expressions:

 Use arithmetic rules to combine terms.

 Example: 3x + 2x = 5x, 2(x + 3) = 2x + 6.

5. Solving Linear Equations:

 Solve for the variable by isolating it.

 Use inverse operations to cancel out terms.
 Example: 3x - 7 = 8 → x = 5.

6. Solving Quadratic Equations:

 Equations with x^2 terms.

 Use factoring, completing the square, or
quadratic formula.
 Example: x^2 - 4x + 4 = 0 → x = 2.

7. Graphing Equations:

 Graphs visualize relationships between

variables.
 Linear equations: straight lines.
 Quadratic equations: parabolas.

8. Inequalities:

 Compare expressions using <, >, ≤, ≥.

 Example: 2x + 3 > 7 → x > 2.
