Effective communication with people of different cultures is especially challenging.
Cultures provide people with ways of thinking-ways of seeing, hearing, and interpreting the
world. When the languages are different, and translation has to be used to communicate, the
potential for misunderstandings increases. There are three ways in which culture interferes with
effective cross-cultural understanding.
First is "cognitive constraints". These are the frames of reference or world views that
provide a backdrop that all new information is compared to or inserted into.
Second are "behavior constraits". Each culture has its own rules about proper behavior
which affect verbal and nonverbal communication. Whether one looks the other person in the
eye-or not; whether one says what one means overtly or talks around the issues all of these and
many more are rules of politeness which differ from culture to culture.
Third factor is "emotional constraints". different cultures regulate the display of emotion
differently. Some cultures get very emotional when they are debating an issue. They yell, then
they cry, they exhibit their anger, fear, frustation, and other feelings openly. Other cultures try to
keep their emotions hidden.
All of these differences tend to lead to communication problems. If the people involved
are not aware of the potential for such problems, they are even more likely to fall victim to them.

Jasmine

Jasmine is an evergreen semi-vining shrub native to tropical areas of Southeast Asia,

Africa, and Australia. The plants are usually up to 3 meters high and 2 meters wide. Jasmine is a
climbing vine with oval, shiny leaves and tubular, waxy-white flowers. It has small white
star-shaped flowers. The Jasmine flower releases its fragrance at night after the sun has set and
especially when the moon is waxing towards fullness, thus it is associated with soothing peaceful
night-time moods. The leaves are oval rich green and have five to nine leaflets, each up to 2½
inches long.

The plant flowers from April to September. Jasmine is propagated by cuttings of nearly
ripe wood in summer. Cuttings are planted in 3-inch pots within 4 weeks, then to 6-inches when
pot is becoming filled with roots. The soil should be kept moist but well drained for optimum
growth. Frequent pruning is required to grow it as a shrub of desired size. Pruning also helps
keep an abundanc of flowers, since flowers are produced on new wood. It grows in full sun to
partial shade. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer.

I have just finished a wonderful book! Love, Ruby Lavender is a ralistic fiction book by
Deborah Wiles. I think this book would be the right reading for 3rd, 4th, or 5th graders.

Ruby Lavender is a ten year old tomboy who lives in Halleluia, Mississippi. Her best
friend is her grandmother, Miss Eula Dapplevine. Over one busy summer, Ruby steals chickens,
Miss Eula goes to Hawaii, and they both have to deal with the loss of Ruby's grandfather in a
fatal car accident. Ruby's arch enemy, Melba Jane Latham, also causes trouble. W e learn about
these events trough letters between Ruby and Miss Eula.

I truly love reading this book. The characters are humorous, and the letters between them
are interesting. One of my favorite parts was when and how Melba Jane's hair turns blue. The
author keeps you guessing about the accident that killed Ruby's grandfather and Melba Jane's
father. At the end of the book, I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to the
characters.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor and who cares about
family. Don't read this book if you don't like to laugh because there are so many funny events.
Some of this book is sad, but the sad parts are important to tell. If you want to read about the
hilarious adventures of a girl and her chickens, then this is a book for you.
