starting “problem”.
Example:
A new teaching method is tried on a large class. At the end of the course, a final exam is
administered. The average score is 73 out of 100 and only 3% of the class failed.
Research Question: Is the new teaching method effective?

1. A Public Health Service Center noted the effect of smoking on health. For men and for women
in each age group, the staff found out that those who had never smoked were, on the average,
somewhat healthier than the current smokers. But the current smokers were, on average, much
healthier than the former smokers.

2. A nationwide vaccination program was started to combat a dreaded disease. In one community
consisting of 100 shot-recipients, five developed high fever and died. All five were children below 5

5. In the student evaluation results, the chairman of a department noted that despite their
