LESSON

INFLUENCE OF RIZAL STUDIES IN INDIGENIZING SOCIAL SCIENCES

Our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, remains very relevant in this age of
internet and social media and this is because of Senator Claro M. Recto who
proposed a bill to study the life and works of Rizal mandatory in every
secondary school. Rizal Bill or Republic Act No. 1425 known as “Rizal Law”
was passed on June 12, 1956. This is “an Act to include in the curricula
of all public and private schools, colleges and universities courses on
the life, works and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli
Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, authorizing the printing and
distribution thereof, and for other purposes”

Dr. Jose Rizal Noli Me Tangere El Filibusterismo

Studying about Rizal, his life, works and writings, influences our
current lives in many aspects:

On his letter to the Jesuit Priest, Fr. Pedro Pastells, he said

that “The mind is like the lamp that a father gives to each of
his sons before they depart on a trip along rough and tortuous
paths. More than by faith, I firmly believe by reasoning and
On Religion by necessity that a Creator exists. Nevertheless, I believe God
to be infinitely wise, perfect, and good”. For him, people
should be given his own freedom to choose his religion
according to his belief because God (the Creator) is infinitely
good and He will understand whatever choices we make.

In his second novel, El Filibusterismo, he wrote that the

government was established for the welfare of the people.
He believed that their primary goal is for the goodness of the
On
country and it will be possible if there is cooperation
Government between the government and the people. With this, there
should be dialogue between the two. As a reformer, he does
not believe that we should use force to change the
government.
In his poem, Through Education Our Motherland Receives
Light, he said that “Education lifts the motherland to the
highest station.” It is only through education that the
country will prosper.

In his essay, The Indolence of the Filipinos, he wrote that

On Education the system of education must promote economic progress
and activity.

Today, we always hear our parents, teachers, and

government officials, advising us to “read, read, and learn.”
It is through education that we, as individuals, will achieve
new heights and prosperity.

In his letter for “Sa mga Kababaihan sa Malolos”, he wrote:

“God gave each individual reason and will of his or her own
to distinguish just from the unjust: all men are born without
shackles and free, nobody has a right to subjugate the will
and the spirit of another. All men are born equal, naked and
On Individual without bonds.” He advised that we should not only rely on
our own judgement but hear also the opinion of others. It is
Freedom wise to listen to the views of other people before rendering
judgement.

Rizal also believed that history teaches us that freedom is

not obtained nor it is free. We have to earn it. And to enjoy
it, you have to bear the responsibility to make the enjoyment
of the freedom possible.

His poem, Sa Aking Mga Kababata, one stanza was written:

“Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa hayop
On National at malansang isda.” Rizal, at his early age, felt that some of
Language his countrymen have developed a colonial mentality as they
already embraced the language (and culture) of the
Spaniards while despising our own national language. He
doesn’t mean that we cannot use or speak other languages,
as Rizal himself is a known polyglot who can speak twenty-
two languages. He just want us to love our own tongue
equally together with the other languages that we know, be
proud (not to be ashamed) of it.
In his poem, To The Filipino Youth, he encouraged the youth
to develop their talents and skills as this will be their license
On Filipino to build a better future. He believes that “Ang kabataan ang
Youth pag-asa ng bayan.” The youth can bring social reform and
can improve the condition of the society. They have to be
aware and proactive regarding the issues that surround the
social and political spheres in the Philippines. The nation
needs the participation of the youth to achieve the goal and
help to bring the country towards prosperity.

Dr. Jose Rizal knows how to use his time well. As the
saying goes “Time is Gold”, he made sure that every minute
will be spent wisely. He studies all his subjects and at the
same time, do creative works – poetry, painting, sculpting;
On Self- attending association meetings, reading, leisure time. A
certified polymath indeed as he excels in everything that he
Discipline does, in the age without computers and internet.. He made
time to do all of the things which he thinks is more
important.
As there are times when his allowance from the Philippines
were late, he learned to strictly manage his budget. Like
how he spend his time, is also the way he spends his
money: wisely.

In Noli Me Tangere, he expressed the growing nationality

consciousness of Filipinos who aspired to attain democratic
On rights. People became more knowledgeable about the past
by reading and appreciating the books. It made us realize
Nationalism that the past and the present ha some similarities. The
tyrant, corrupt and abusive Spanish government, as well as
our own fellow Filipinos who despised our country, are
exposed in both novels and as readers, our awareness
against this kind of governance will be in our minds and by
this, it will make us to choose our next leaders wisely.

Youth needs a model whom they can look up to and Rizal is a good
example. He is an icon of excellence in both Science and Arts, an inspiration
in sacrifice, struggle and hard work that despite the temptation in his
surroundings, he focused on what he knows is most important and that is his
country, the Philippines, and its people.
