10 Students of Section D, H, F, L, and I In English

Introduction

English subject plays a crucial role in students academic performance and is also

considered a core subject in most educational systems around the world. We all knew that

learning English can be a challenging task due to its complex grammar rules, pronunciation

difficulties, and limited exposure to English-speaking environments. Understanding the various

factors that influence the academic performance of grade 10 students in English is crucial for

educators and students alike.

What do you think are these factors? There are various factors that will affect your

academic performance in learning English subject. This study aims to explore these factors that

affect their academic performance and know if they do something to improve on it.

Statement of the Problem

The specific research questions in this study were addressed as follows:

1. What are the factors that affect your academic performance in English the most?
2. How would these factors will affect your academic performance in English?

3. Have you done any practices to improve on the factors that affect your academic

performance in English?

Methodology

Research design : Exploratory Sequential Mixed

Research setting : LCNHS Annex Building, Classroom of Grade 10 students of D,H,L,F,

and I

Data collection :

•Surveys and Questionnaires

•Online Interviews

•Observations

•Focus Groups

Field sampling : 10 students each section

Sampling scheme : Simple Random Sampling

Factors Affecting the Academic Performance of Legazpi City National High

School(LCNHS) Grade 10 Students of Section D, H, F, L, and I In English

A. Language skills
According to 21 students, language skills negatively affect their academic performance in

English as they sometimes struggle with understanding and pronouncing the language or words

of English and as they are not also fluent in it.

B. Reading habits

According to 25 students, reading habits positively affect their academic performance in

English as it can improve vocabulary, comprehension, and their critical thinking skills.

C. Motivation and interest

According to 35 students we interviewed including our opinion, motivation and interest

positively affect and at the same time negatively affect their academic performance in English as

most of the times, they procrastinate because they don’t have enough motivation and interest on

a certain subject. And as for the other students who are motivated and have a genuine interest in

the subject are more likely to actively engage in class discussions and assignments.

D. Teacher quality

According to 20 students, teacher quality positively affect their academic performance in

English as for them teachers are the one who will give you the most motivation. And in their

experience, it gives them more motivation to do a task when their teacher explained it to them

really well.

E. Home environment

According to 23 students, home environment negatively affect their academic

performance as they often have a hard time finishing all their task because their house is not the
best place where they could focus so they sometimes bring their tasks to school or anywhere that

they can focus and not be disturbed.

F. Peer influence

According to 30 students, peer influence is sometimes not a great help for them,

especially with negative peer pressure that can distract them from doing their activities and tasks.

With also positive peer relationships and collaboration can enhance their learning and academic

performance in English.

G. Access to resources

According to 25 students including our opinion, access to resources negatively affect our

academic performance in English as there are times when the tasks requires printing and for

someone who doesn’t have a printer, it’s hard for us to print. And a tasks that also requires

internet is hard for those who don’t have any, even cellphones.

Results and Discussion

Table 1.0 shows the response of each sections 10 students on the question “What are the

factors that affect your academic performance in English the most?”

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study. The following conclusions are generated.

1. There are five factors that have mostly affect the academic performance of the grade

10 respondents in English. Language skills, Reading habits, Motivation and Interest,

Home environment, and Peers influence are mostly affecting their academic

performance in English either negatively or positively.


2. The factors that affect the academic performance of grade 10 respondents in English

is mostly negatively affect their academic performance in English than it positively

affect their academic performance in English.

3. Approximately 72% of the respondents have done practices to improve the factors

that affect their academic performance in English and the remaining 28% of students

who answered “no” haven’t done any practices to improve their academic

performance in English.
