1.1 Safety precautions when working on a high-voltage system

Danger to life due to high voltage
The high-voltage system is under high voltage. Severe or fatal
injury due to electric shock.
– Persons with life-preserving or other electronic medical devi‐
ces in or on their body must not perform any work on the high-
voltage system. Such medical devices include internal anal‐
gesic pumps, implanted defibrillators, pacemakers, insulin

pumps and hearing aids.
– The high-voltage system must be de-energised by a suitably
qualified technician.

Risk of injury from activated stationary air conditioning

On electric and hybrid vehicles with active stationary air condi‐
tioning, the stationary air conditioning could switch on uninten‐
tionally. Risk of limbs becoming trapped or drawn in by the
radiator fan starting automatically.
– Deactivate the stationary air conditioning.

2 Hazard classification of high-voltage

system
WARNING
The vehicle’s high-voltage system and the high-voltage battery

are dangerous and can cause burns or other injuries and even
lead to a fatal electric shock.
• Any work on the high-voltage system, or on systems which
could be indirectly affected by it, must only be carried out
by properly trained and qualified expert personnel.
• If there are any questions or there is any doubt regarding
the terms “high-voltage technician” or “high-voltage ex‐
pert”, likewise if there are any questions about the high-
voltage system, the responsible importer must be contac‐

3.1 Components of aerial systems

Infotainment system aerials are used to receive all analogue and
digital signal sources without interference. All vehicle aerials are
integrated into the left and right exterior mirrors. In addition to the
existing aerial concept in the exterior mirrors there may also be
one or two radio, telephone and navigation aerials on the roof.
The aerial concept versions in the vehicle are dependent on the
respective installation of optional accessories. The vehicle equip‐
ment determines the aerial version. The following factors deter‐
mine the layout of the aerial concept:
♦ Radio model (AM/FM1 and FM2 aerial or diversity function)

3.4.2 Removing and installing radio aerial -

R248- / -R51- in exterior mirror, double
cab and dropside vehicles
If the aerial system in the exterior mirror of double cab and drop‐
side vehicles have to be repaired, the complete mirror base
including the bow has to be renewed. Because the aerial cables
with connectors cannot be pushed through the bow afterwards,
the complete base of the mirror, including bow and the internal
aerial cables, is regarded as the replacement part.

Depending on equipment level, the exterior mirrors of double cab

and dropside vehicles may have different aerials installed than
shown in the illustration.
Potential replacement part versions when repairing aerials in ex‐
terior mirror of double cab and dropside vehicles:

5.1 Components of telephone system

The preparation for mobile telephone is available only in conjunc‐
tion with a radio/navigation system.
With preparation for mobile telephone, Bluetooth access to tele‐
phone data saved on a cell phone - R54- registered to the vehicle
system is made possible.
The cell phone - R54- to be paired must have a Bluetooth inter‐
face, otherwise the preparation for mobile telephone feature will
not work.
Various Bluetooth profiles are used, such as:
♦ HFP stands for “hands-free profile” and is for the telephone
audio/voice channel. In this case, pure voice data are trans‐
ferred.
♦ With the Bluetooth profile “A2DP audio streaming”, music files
of the registered Bluetooth device are sent to the telephone
transmitter and receiver unit - R36- in stereo quality. The vol‐
ume of transferred data is then much greater than with pure
voice data.
Telephone system in rear passenger compartment
The telephone system in rear passenger compartment (hands-
free system in rear passenger compartment with private mode)
works independently from all other preparations for mobile tele‐
phones in the vehicle. The telephone system in the rear passen‐
ger compartment cannot be controlled via the menus in the dash
panel insert or the factory-installed radio or navigation system.

accessory.
The Bluetooth technology is used to link a mobile telephone to
the hands-free system of the vehicle. For using the telephone
system in rear passenger compartment with a mobile telephone

For a better usability of infotainment, telephone, navigation,
cruise control system and vehicle menu, buttons are integrated in
steering wheel. For Tiptronic, additional rocker switches are pro‐
vided to the right and to the left.
The control unit for multifunction steering wheel - J453- ( multi‐
function buttons on left in steering wheel - E440- ) reads the button
information and transfers them to control unit for steering column

10.2 General description

The wireless internet access system consists of an internet ac‐
cess control unit - J666- with an integral router. A SIM card from
a telecommunications provider is required for internet access.
WiFi-enabled devices can be connected wirelessly to the internet
access control unit - J666- . The WiFi capability means that all the
satelettronica
passengers in the vehicle are able to connect to the internet.
Note
Not all WiFi-enabled end devices have been tested for compati‐
bility with the vehicle's electrical systems. It is, therefore, possible
that such devices could cause interference.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is located behind the first
row of seats where it is bolted to a bracket under the moulded
headliner of the vehicle. The system consists of the following

The Rear Seat Entertainment system has no connection to the
sound system of the vehicle.
The Rear Seat Entertainment system only works if the tempera‐
ture in the vehicle interior is between -15°C (+5°F) and +60°C
(+140°F). In the case of a lower or higher temperature, the system
cannot be operated and will switch off automatically if already
running.

In connection with the emergency call module control unit and

communication unit - J949- , Car-Net services can be realised by
way of “emergency call + security and service”.
The emergency call module control unit and communication unit
- J949- is fitted in a crash-safe location behind dash panel. The
emergency call module control unit and communication unit -
J949- comprises a telephone module, an emergency call module
and a compass module. For localisation, the emergency call mod‐
ule control unit and communication unit - J949- is fitted with a GPS
receiver. A separate SIM card for emergency calls and roadside
assistance calls is installed in the unit. Other online services are
available depending on the data plan.
The mobile online services system is capable of self-diagnosis.
Fault finding is performed using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.
