A noun is a word that names something: a person or a thing.

1) CLASSIFICATION OF A NOUN:

Acording to word formation.

Simple: pencil, dog, mountain

Derived: driver, discontent

Compound: postcard, dining-room

Acording to name.

Common: girl, river

Proper: Tina, Mississippi

Acording to countability.

Countable: apple-apples

Uncountable: noise-little noise

Acording to gender.

Feminine: women, sister

Masculine: men, brother

Common: cousin, friend

Neuter: book, house

2) GENITIVE OF THE NOUN: Shows the possesion in two ways.

Analytical ,,OF’’: The cover of book.

Synthetical ‘S / S’ / ‘: The book’s cover.

3) PLURAL OF NOUNS:

To make regular nouns plural, add -S to the end: cat-cats

If the singular noun ends is (-S, SS, SH, CH, X, Z) add -ES to the end to make it
plural: truss-trusses

In some cases, singular nouns ending is (S or Z), require that you duble the (S or Z)
prioritiz to adding the ES for pluralization: fez-fezzes

If the noun ends with (F, FE) the F is often changed to -VE before adding the -S to
form the plural version: wife-wives

If a singular noun ends in (Y) and the letter before the Y is a consonant, change the
ending to IES to make the noun plural: city-cities

If the singular noun ends in (-Y)and the letter before is before Y is a vowel, simply
add an S to make it plural: ray-rays

If the singular noun ends in (-O), add ES to make it plural: potato-potatoes

The root vowel change in plural: goose-geese, man-men, woman-women, tooth-


teeth, foot-feet, louse-lice, mouse-mice

Nouns with origin in Greek or latin get in plural (I, AL, A, ES, AS): larva-larvae

Some nouns don’t change at all when they-re pluralized: sheep-sheep

Some noun get (EN) in plural form : child-children

Compound nouns are pluralized in the words that can be counted: passer by-pasers

4) NOUN-VERB AGREEMENT:

The number of the noun determines the form of the verbs: some readers

Some nouns and pronouns seem to be plural but function as ,,trick singular”:
everybody-a singular form pronoun whitch refers to a group.
