A Vocabulary of IciBemba
A Vocabulary of IciBemba
2. Orthography
In the edited vocabulary we have in general followed the modem orthography
of Icibemba, transcribing from the analytical orthography used by Guthrie.
The original transcription was probably too abstract for popular adoption,
although some of its features would be a technical improvement on present
practice. In its early form however Guthrie's transcription contained some
ambiguities which have had to be resolved editorially.
Guthrie regarded semi-vowels (y and w) as the realisation of vowel-
sequences. Thus uibwalwais written {uibualua} and umufyala {umufiala} -
Guthrie's spellings are hereafter enclosed in braces. Other vowel-sequences
result in a long vowel: so umweni {umueni} but abeeni {abaeni}; {ae},
{ee} (and {ai }) are all to be pronounced ee, but the variety of representation
adoptedby Guthrieallows each prefix and stem to be spelled in a constantway
regardless of the elements that precede or follow. Figure 2 illustrates such
vowel-sequences and their pronunciationand modem spelling.
{aa} - aa {ia} - ya {ua} -wa
{amaato} -> amaat6 {iliasi} -> ilyashi {ubuato} -uibwatb
cf. ubwat6 'boat' 'conversation' 'boat'
{ae} - ee {ie} -* ye {ue} - we
{amaela} - ameela {imiele} - imyele {umuele} -uumwele
cf. ubwela 'fish-spear' cf umwele 'knife' 'knife'
{ai} - ee {ii} - ii {ui} - wi
{amaino} -> ameeno {iliin} -> iliino {umuipia} - umwipwa
cf. iliino 'tooth' 'tooth' 'nephew'
{ao} - oo {iol -- yo {uo} - oo
{abaonausi -4 aboonaushi { imiona} -o imyona {umuona} - umoona
cf. umoonaushi 'destroyer' cf. umoona 'nostril' 'nostril'
{au} - oo {iu} -- yu {uu} -i uu
{amaulu} - amoolu {imiuba} -e imyuba {ukuulul} - ukuulu
cf. ukuulu 'leg' cf. umuuba 'bellows' 'leg'

realised mm,nn, nny and Or when they are followed in the next syllable by a
prenasalised consonant. Thus:
ilulamba/ innamba 'river-bank' cf. iululiilo / indiilo 'dish'
ulubansa / immansa 'courtyard' ulubali / imbali 'side'
uilwembe/ innyembe 'razor' ulwela / injela 'dulcimer key'
Guthrie's practice was to write the underlying plosives: {ingonbe} -
irjombe, {inbansa} -> immansa, leaving the reader to make the
phonological resolution. We have preferredto write a double nasal; we have
however retaineda cross-referencefrom Guthrie's spelling.
3. Segmentation
Guthrie lists both verbs and nominals (nouns, adjectives etc.) according to
their stem; the WF do the same for verbs and adjectives but list nouns under a
variantof their singularprefix. This is perhapsthe most widespreadpractice in
Bantu lexicography, but Guthrie's practice has much to recommend it; it
brings together verbs and their nominal derivatives, and it removes frequent
hesitation when the singularform of a noun is of dubious occurrenceor cannot
be uniquely deduced from its plural, augmentative or diminutive forms; it has
been followed e.g. in Benson's Kikuyu-English dictionary and Van
Avermaet'sDictionnaire kiluba-francais.
We have followed Guthrie's practice, except that we have treated as stem
what is left after the removal of regular prefixes (noun-class prefixes,
adjectival prefixes, reflexive object prefix); Guthrie further removed certain
static elements on grounds that can only be justified by etymology and by
certain distributional properties. Thus amampanda'fork' we have segmented
dmaImpdndaafter the prefix ama-, but Guthrie has segmented amamIpanda,
regarding -m- as an 'augment', an invariably low-toned element resembling a
noun-class prefix, but playing no part in the concord system. Similarly
Guthrie has listed -cecem- 'chatter (of teeth)' under cem, regardingthe initial
ce as arising from an (unproductive)process of radical 'preduplication'.In all
cases where our segmentation differs from Guthrie's, we have retained cross-
references at the place suggested by his segmentation.
Segmentation (our own and Guthrie's) has been equally marked by a
vertical line, e.g. Ipande 'yard length', -i Ibwanshik- 'topple over',
-paa paata 'entreat'; the symbol + is used where the segmentation comes
between two letters in Guthrie's transcription that have a combined
realisation, e.g. {iH+gana 'headpad' (-* irand), { ma+insi} 'water' (-e
ameenshi).

4. Collation
Guthrielisted vocabularyin an orderdeterminedby a numberof criteria:
(i) C1, in the order: p b m f t 1 n s k g/
(ii) The quality of V1, in the order: a i u e o
(iii) C2, in the order: p p b fb m f ft t l nsnss k k0 ng r
(iv) The quantity and tone of V1, in the order: a a aa aa etc.
(v) The quality of V2 etc.
The order is illustrated in Figure 3, which is restricted to verbal entries. We
have substituted conventional alphabetic listing, except that a double nasal
consonant at the startof a stem has been treatedas if the first nasal were partof
the prefix, e.g. icin Inanda 'musical instrument'.

5. Tone
Guthrie's method of marking tone has been retained in this edition except to
the extent entailed by other orthographicmodifications (e.g. {ia -} ya).
Taking the case of disyllabic noun-stems with full prefix, Guthrie
distinguishes:
Ia ulupako hollowin tree Ha iulupali barkbag
lb umupaka boundary IIb akapale squirrel
(the numbering of the tone-groups is drawn from later work, e.g. MG2; tone-
group IIa is sometimes represented ulupali). In tone-groups Ib and IIb tones
are invariable, and the tonality of the prefix is determined by that of the stem.
The other two tone-groups have realisations varying with syntactic context,
e.g.
xii Malcolm Guthrieand Michael Mann
6. Presentation
Apart from the systematic divergences noted above, the present work is a
faithful representationof Guthrie's typescript.Where spelling or segmentation
differs significantly from that adopted here, an indication of the original is
enclosed in {braces . Some of Guthrie's abbreviationshave been expanded as
set out below. Pencilled additions have been indicated by a raised +,
occasional pencilled deletions have been prefaced *. Where pencilled additions
consist of uncommented cross-references, these have been added in the form
'+(See -tetemuk-, i Ishika).' Editorial cross-references are indicated with
an arrow -, editorial comment is enclosed in [square brackets]; raised
brackets are used to indicate that tone-marking (usually of an example) has
been added editorially, e.g. [umutima .
