Head Lice
Head Lice
We ask all parents to check your child/children for lice, so that we can prevent a
potential outbreak at school.
Tiny eggs on the hair look like flakes of dandruff, see photo below. Head lice can be hard to
see. You need to look closely, at the person's head under a bright light. Full sun or the
brightest lights in your home during daylight hours work well. A magnifying glass can help.
If your find eggs or your child has symptoms, such as itching of the scalp, please follow the
instructions in the following links:
After you have started the treatment it is most important to comb the hair with a
special comb. You can buy this at your pharmacy together with any shampoo for
treating lice.
It is very important to repeat the treatment one week after the first treatment. This will
break the life cycle of the louse by making sure that any newly hatched lice are killed!
Please keep on combing the hair daily for a period of 2-3 weeks to make sure there
are no new eggs that can turn into a new louse. Please remember the importance of
regularly carrying out detection combing as a prevention to any outbreak.
We would like to stress that finding a head lice infection is nothing to be concerned about.
Head lice infections are common in children of school age and are not harmful. Don’t forget
if you do find head lice in your child’s hair, to let all close contacts (including the school)
know about it - so everyone can check for head lice.
