Dinner For My Family
Thanksgiving dinner for my family has always been rather interesting. It starts off
with me sleeping in as late as I can before someone decides to ruin the morning and
wake me up. My family has a tradition that is followed every year for Thanksgiving.
After I get woken up by someone, I manage to stomp up the steps and stumble into the
shower without saying anything to a single person who is at my house, and by the time
I get up, there is usually about 15 20 people already. I enter the shower and just let the
hot water run onto myself, because it will usually put me into a better mood. After
spending about twenty minutes in the bathroom while showering and brushing my teeth
I walk myself back down the steps into my room to get my day started. After getting
dressed into my famous Thanksgiving attire which consists of black Nike sweatpants
with a Philadelphia Eagles hoodie on, I then come ack upstairs to the awful smell of the
pumpkinpie. It smells stinky, I said, wrinkling my nose as I turned over the hard,
pockmarked resin in my palm. Like a... I giggled, unable to say the rude word
(Narayan 18). That is usually exactly how I am feeling about the smell of the pumpkin
pie my grandma hand makes. I know that the pumpkin pie is a packet of powder
flavored with pumpkin poured into a pre made crust that she bought from the grocery
store the night before. However, she always finds a way to get the entire familyto believe
that it is her secret recipe. During this time of the day,
House Of The Spirits Essay
From the first lines of The House of the Spirits, Allende uses the technique of a
feminized magical realism to pull the reader into a political historical novel. Alba
Trueba from Allende s The House of the Spirits is an effective example of this
revolutionary female narration. Her story, which includes her female relatives
viewpoints and excludes Trueba s version, is a direct block to Trueba s egotistic, stiff,
and not exactly true version of events. Her woman centered narration is, further, a symbol
of the triumph of women s expression and their revision of patriarchal and authoritarian
history. Alba watches the military erase history and devastate the country, but she in turn
uses her power of writing to resist. Alba and her female, therefore,... Show more content

In her essay Memory and Retelling: The Role of Women in La Casa de Los Espíritus ,
Susan Frick clarifies Alba s unique narrative style. She asserts that in Alba s woman
centered form of narration, she is tapping into collective memory to evoke and interpret
the stories and voices of the past and to learn how best to proceed with her own
individual life experience (Frick 29). Clara, Alba s grandmother, was already in the habit
of documenting significant events and afterward, when she was voiceless on purpose,
she also detailed insignificances, never suspecting that fifty years later, Alba, her
granddaughter, would use her notebooks to regain the past and overcome fears. She
struggles, with her grandmother s diaries, her mother s letters, and many other family
documents, to assemble the family s story in a way that joins events instead of just
recording them. According to Alba and her female relatives, direct history is not the
only way to record events, and Alba s conscious narration of the Trueba family is a more
incorporating approach to life and
