Level 3 Inspection
Inspected to SR2 Requirements outlined in Annex A of API 5CT/ISO 11960
1. Inspect pipe for imperfections greater than 5%, or a new effective wall thickness less than
87.5% of the specified wall thickness. All pipe shall be inspected for the detection of
longitudinal and transverse imperfections on the OD and ID surfaces to acceptance level L2.
2. Inspect the weld seam of ERW products to the requirements of SR11.5, acceptance level L3.
3. Full length drift pipe to API requirements If alternate drift diameters are specified, then the
alternate drift shall be used if applicable.
4. Check pipe for straightness outlined in API 5CT/ISO 11960, prove up suspect joints to API
straightness requirements.
5. Special End Area (SEA): – Wet magnetic particle inspection for sizes greater than 4 ½” OD,
dry magnetic particle inspection for less than 4 ½”
 Longitudinal and transverse orientations
 Circular and longitudinal magnetic fields
6. Apply API modified thread compound to all API connections and Kendex storage compound
to all premium joint connections1. Install clean thread protectors.
 Apply a different thread compound when specified on the purchase order (i.e. Rig
Ready)
7. Verify that key attributes of the mill stencil match the material that is on the purchase order
for every joint. Key attributes include:
 Pipe outside diameter
 Weight or wall thickness
 Grade
 Connection type
Note: Any illegible mill stencils or material that does not match the purchase order product
description shall be reported to the purchaser at the time of inspection.
8. The heat number for each joint shall also be recorded and traceable to the corresponding
joint identified on the completed Inspection Report.

Used Tubing

J55 and L80 EUE

1. Inspect pipe for imperfections greater than 15% using electromagnetic inspection
techniques described in API RP 5A5. All pipe shall be inspected for the detection of
longitudinal and transverse imperfections on the OD and ID surfaces.
2. Inspect pipe for a net effective wall thickness less than 85% of the specified thickness using
acceptable wall thickness measurements as per API RP 5C1, pipe wall micrometers, sonic
pulse-echo instruments, or gamma ray devices that the operator can demonstrate to be
within 2 percent accuracy, for wall thickness determination

3. Full length drift pipe to meet the requirements of API 5CT; Special Drift requirements will be
listed on the PO request to the third-party inspection company.
4. Check pipe for straightness outlined in API 5CT/ISO 11960, Latest Edition.
5. Clean and inspect threaded ends for damage according to the visual thread inspection
parameters covered in API RP 5A5.
6. Apply API modified thread compound to all API connections
Tubular goods that meet all of the above requirements shall be painted with a yellow band.
Tubular goods that do not meet all of the above requirements shall be rejected. The method of
identifying the rejected tubing shall follow the internal procedure of the inspection company.

Used Tubing with Premium Joint Connections

1. Pipe will be inspected to the parameters mentioned above.
2. MI will require notice of inspection to co-ordinate Technical Services to inspect connection
condition, at our discretion.
3. Threaded ends shall be cleaned and visually inspected for damage. Connections shall be
coated with Kendex (or equivalent) storage compound (complete thread form coverage)
before cleaned thread protectors are installed.

Lease Site Returned Casing

Casing that is returned from the lease site is considered a “rig return”. The outcome and resultant
class consideration are listed below:

Inspection
Unless there is an agreed upon and recorded customer requirement for rig return inspections, all
material shall be inspected to a . Level 1 Inspection, a criterion which is outlined above.

Classification
New: Represents pipe that meets all API requirements associated with a Level 1 inspection.
 No tong marks on either pipe body/coupling, slip cuts or damage is seen on the tube body
that exceeds API 5CT, Latest Revision, tolerances (See Table 1).
 Threads, pin and box, are compliant to all requirements of API RP 5A5, Latest Revision.
 Heat number and manufacturer is clearly identified on the joint
 Each pipe length drifts throughout its entire length as per API 5CT, Latest Revision,
requirements.
 If alternate drift diameters are specified, then the alternate drift shall be used if applicable.
New Damaged: Represents pipe that can be re-furbished to meet all API requirements (i.e. damaged
pin threads, coupling, etc.) and upgraded to New.
 No tong marks on pipe body, slip cuts or damage is seen on the tube body that exceeds API
5CT, Latest Revision, tolerances (See Table 1).
