WHAT IS PARTICLE BOARD?
Particle board(chipboard /fibreboard) is a type of engineered wood product made from wood particles, such as sawdust, wood chips, and shavings,
mixed with a resin binder and compressed into sheets

GRADES OF PARTICLE BOARD

Particle board comes in different grades, which denote its quality and intended use.
Common grades include
1. Standard Grade: This is the basic particle board used for general applications like shelving and inexpensive furniture. It’s less dense and not as
strong as higher-grade boards.
2. Furniture Grade: This grade offers better quality and is often used in making furniture. It has a smoother surface and is more durable than
standard grade particle board.
3. Moisture-Resistant Grade: Designed for environments where moisture is a concern, like kitchens and bathrooms, this grade has additives that
make it less susceptible to swelling and warping when exposed to moisture.
4. Exterior Grade: This is the highest quality particle board, suitable for outdoor use. It’s engineered to withstand exposure to the elements and is
commonly used in outdoor furniture and construction applications.

APPLICATIONS

Particle Board in Flooring

● Flooring material in temporary structures where there is less application
of loads.
● Used as covering for hardwood floors, as hardwood boards have low
resistance to scratches to protect them.
● Wood veneer particle board or laminated particle board is used in
flooring where finished aesthetic look is desired.

Partitioning or Wall Paneling

● Particle boards are used in wall partitions, as they are non-load bearing
members in the structure.
● For cost-effective options, particle boards can be used as they have
thermal and sound insulation properties.
● Laminated particle boards are extensively used in wall panels as they
give finished walls.

Particle Board in False Ceilings

● Laminated particle boards and cement particle boards are widely used in false
ceilings.
● Due to their thermal insulation properties they are extensively used in false
ceilings for centrally air-conditioned rooms.
● Particle boards are extensively used as ceiling tiles for auditoriums, computer
centers, cinema halls and theaters and in as display boards in commercial
establishments.
● In building construction it is used in false ceiling and paneling due to its
thermo-acoustic insulation properties.

● Particle core is used in manufacturing doors, as it provides flat and smooth surface for
bonding with the door skin. It also has good screw-holding capacity for fixing hinges, Face veneer

Particle Board in Furniture:

● Wood veneer particle board are durable and perform better in moist environment as
compared to plain particle board.
● Hence, used in kitchen areas and bathrooms in the form of modular kitchen cabinets, storage
units, countertops, table tops, wardrobes and dressing units.
● Plain particle boards are useful in interior areas like bedrooms which have beds, wardrobes,
storage units, etc. It is also used in making shoe racks, computer tables, book shelves, television
cabinets, etc.
● Office furniture is mass-produced by using particle boards.
● Readymade units of office furniture are directly supplied to the offices with decorative
laminated particle board tops.

Commercial Industry:
● On commercial scale, particle boards(Wood veneer particle boards) are used in television, speaker
boxes, sewing machine tops, display boards, automobiles’ parts and in other products which requires
furnished surfaces.

WHAT IS BLOCK BOARD?

A blockboard( lumber plywood) is a type of engineered wood product It is composed of a core made of wooden
strips or blocks that are glued together, sandwiched between two outer layers of plywood.
The core blocks are made from softwood species like pine or fir.

The construction of blockboard gives it advantages in terms of strength, stability, and resistance to warping.
The core blocks provide structural integrity, while the outer layers on the outside enhance the appearance and
offer a smooth surface finish that can be easily painted, stained, or varnished.

OUTER FACE The specific characteristics of blockboard make it suitable for

applications where both strength and aesthetics are important.
However, due to its wood-based construction, blockboards can
INNER FACE be susceptible to moisture and should be used in appropriate
environments to prevent potential issues like swelling or
delamination.

TYPES OF BLOCKBOARDS
The classification of block boards depend on different properties such as quality, use, raw wood used for the
core. Followings are the type of blockboard:

A. Depending on quaLity and use:

1. Interior Grade Blockboard
2. Exterior Grade Blockboard
B. Depending on the raw wood used in the core:
1. Softwood Blockboard
2. Hardwood Blockboard

Different aspects of these types are briefly discussed below:

Interior Grade Blockboard
These grades are made for indoor uses which are resistant to moisture and called MR (Moisture Resistant) eg.
Furniture, door, window shutter.
Exterior Grade Blockboard
This variety of blockboard is manufactured for outdoor uses. These are called BWP (Boiling Water Proof) or as
BWR (Boiling Water Resistant). This high quality of resistance is because of the adhesives used here are also
good in quality.
Softwood Block board
Solid blocks of wood are used to make each blockboard sheet those are attached together using glue. The
sheets are called strips or battens. The surface is covered with hardwood veneers.
Hardwood Block board
Hardwood is dense, heavy, costly, strong as the core is made from hard sheets. The coating is also by
hardwood.

APPLICATIONS

Furniture Manufacturing: Blockboard is widely used in furniture making. It serves as the core material
for constructing panels in various types of furniture such as beds, tables, cabinets, shelves, and
wardrobes.
Blockboard is used to make headboards for beds, providing a stable and solid backing for the bed while also
allowing for decorative surface treatments.

Doors: Blockboard is often used to make doors, especially interior doors. It provides stability and
durability to the door structure while allowing for different finishes and designs on the surface veneers.

Interior: Blockboard can be used as a material for interior wall paneling, adding texture and
warmth to the space while also providing structural support.
Blockboard can be used to create partitions and wall panels in homes and commercial
spaces. It offers structural strength and can support different finishes and decorative elements.
Blockboard's layered construction can contribute to soundproofing and insulation when used as part of
interior walls or partitions.

False Ceilings: In some cases, blockboard may be used to create false ceilings. It can serve as
a base for attaching ceiling materials and lighting fixtures.

Shopfitting: In commercial spaces, blockboard is used for creating display units,

store fixtures, and other components required for shopfitting.
