Chapter – 5 Combustion & Fuel
Fair-Work Worksheet Answer key

Q.1 Give two examples of each of the following.

(a) Solid fuels – wood, coal
(b) Secondary fuels – water gas, producer gas
(c) Renewable fuels – solar energy, hydropower

Q.2 Which part of a flame does a goldsmith use for melting gold and silver?
Why?
Ans. The outermost zone of a flame is used as it has the highest temperature.

Q.3 (a) Comparing the calorific values of coal and petrol, state which fuel
Is better and why? Coal is about 25,000 – 33,000 kJ/kg and petrol is
45,000 kJ/kg
(b) List three other characteristics of a good fuel.
Ans. (a) As the calorific value of petrol is more it is a better fuel.

(b)

• It is very easy to transport.

• It is cheap.
• It should cause minimum pollution.

Q.4 Give an appropriate reason for each of the following.

(a) Sodium is kept immersed in kerosene.
Ans. Sodium has very low ignition temperature, i.e., it catches fire on coming in
contact with air, so it is kept in kerosene.

(b) Water cannot be used to put out a fire caused by inflammable

substances like petrol.
Ans. Since water is heavier than petrol, petrol will come above the water and
continue the contact with the atmosphere (oxygen). Already the existing
temperature of the atmosphere will be high due to the fire, most of the water
poured will evaporate faster. So, we cannot stop the petrol fires using water.

Q.5 60 kg of fuel was completely burnt for an experiment. The amount of heat
energy was found to be 1, 80,000 kJ. Calculate the calorific value of the
fuel.
Ans. Amount of fuel burnt = 60 kg
Amount of heat produced = 1,80,000 kJ
Calorific value of the fuel = Heat produced / Amount of fuel
= 1,80,000 / 60 = 3,000 kJ/kg
∴ Calorific value of the fuel is 3,000 kJ/kg.
Q.6 Draw a neat and labeled diagram of a candle flame.
