FLIGHT JACKET (SENTINEL)
1. INTRODUCTION
A. The Mk.50 Flight Jacket (Fig 101) is a personal flotation device to aid the wearer,
who may be either conscious or unconscious, to keep afloat. The flight jacket
will supply a minimum of 275 Newtons of buoyancy.
B. The flight jacket is manually inflated once the wearer is in the water and when fully
inflated, it will turn the wearer, even when unconscious, to an angle of between
30° to 60° from the vertical with their mouth and nose held clear of the water.
C. The flight jacket is available in two variants:
(1) Single chamber - The inflatable stole is a single chamber device with a
single inflation system and a single oral inflation valve.
(2) Twin chamber - The inflatable stole has two chambers which can be inflated
independently of each other. Each chamber has an inflation system and
an oral inflation valve. Twin chamber stoles are supplied for redundancy
if there is a leak in one of the air chambers or it does not inflate.

(2) Single Chamber Stole:
(a) The single chamber stole is made from two panels of polyurethane
coated nylon fabric, welded together around the edge to form an
inflatable chamber.
(b) An inflation valve is welded to the front left lobe of the stole. A Halkey
Roberts manual inflator is attached to the inflation valve. A 60g CO2
cylinder and an operating knob are attached to the manual inflator.
(c) A webbing lifeline comes with a black plastic toggle that is attached
to the bottom of the left stole lobe. When not in use the lifeline and
toggle are stowed in an elastic loop.
(d) An oral inflation tube and valve assembly is welded to the front right
stole lobe. The wearer can inflate or top up the stole with the oral
inflation tube.

rescue services to find the wearer at night.
(l) Lifting beckets are attached to snap fasteners adjacent to the reflective
strips on the front of each stole lobe.

(3) Twin Chamber Stole:
(a) The Twin chamber stole is made from three panels. The front and
rear panels are made from polyurethane coated nylon fabric. The
middle panel, or baffle, is made from polyurethane. All three panels
are welded together around the edge to make two independent
chambers.
(b) The twin chamber stole has two inflation valves. One inflation valve
is welded to the front left lobe of the stole to inflate the front chamber.
The other inflation valve is welded to the rear of the right stole lobe
to inflate the rear chamber.

1. GENERAL
A. The Illustrated Parts List (I.P.L.) has been prepared for the sole function to identify
and/or order replacement parts only, it should not be used for any other function.
2. INTRODUCTION
A. Illustrations
(2) When it is not possible to illustrate on the basic illustration all variants of an
assembly, additional illustrations will be given. The additional illustrations
will bear the same figure number as the basic illustration, but will be
suffixed by a letter, taken in alpha sequence, A through Z. When additional
io n d
illustrations are used it will be shown in ‘FIG-ITEM’ column of the parts list.

B. Item Numbering lic py rin
ub co P
l P d en
(1) In each illustration the items are numbered from 1 and, as a general rule,
continue in increments of 10, e.g. 10, 20, 30 etc., to let new items be
ca lle h

put into the sequence without the necessity for the full renumbering of
subsequent items.
ch on lled
(2) All item numbers will be basic numbers (i.e. 10, 20, 30 etc.), however,
Te c ro
will be shown as alpha numbers (i.e. 10A, 10B, 10C etc.) using alpha
or o
sequence variants.

C. Non-Illustrated Items
(1) Some item numbers in the parts list are preceded by a hyphen (-). This
shows that this item number will not be found on the illustration, either
because it is not policy to illustrate such an item, e.g. breaking thread, or,
because the item is not illustrated in the form in which it is listed (i.e. the
item may be listed as an assembly, but illustrated ‘exploded’, in order to
show the component parts that may be procurable).
D. Part Number
(1) The part number given in this column (in the majority of cases), will be the
part number given by the Design Authority for that applicable item.

E. Nomenclature
(1) A brief description of the item is included, this includes a descriptive noun
plus any additional descriptive words which aid in the identification of the
item. Extra useful information, such as dimensions, materials etc. may
also be included.
(1) In this column ‘RF’ shows that an item is ‘Reference Only’ at this location. In
other words, it is already recorded for spares function in another illustration
as part of another assembly or sub- assembly.
(2) ‘AR’ means, ‘As Required’. It is usually applied to items such as cordage,
where quantity requirements may change from assembly to assembly.
(3) The number given in this column against each item is the quantity of that
item necessary per assembly, per sub-assembly or per sub-sub-assembly
io n d
as applicable.
