2. STRUCTURE OF THE MANUAL

Te c ro

A. Chapters and Page Numbers

nt
or o

(1) Chapters are allocated to each main topic of the manual. For each of
(F Unc

these chapters, a block of 100 page numbers is allocated. These will be

a

numbered as:

Chapter 1; Pages 101 - 199

Chapter 2; Pages 201 - 299

Chapter 3; Pages 301 - 399

Chapter 4; Pages 401 - 499, etc.

(2) In cases where more than 100 pages are needed to display the information,
the page numbers will ascend in the normal sequence to n98, which will
be followed by 98.1, 98.2, etc.

(3) Auxiliary sections of the manual, for example an Appendix or The List of
Effective Pages, will have their own page number sequence in the range
1 - 99.

B. List of Effective Pages

(1) A List of Effective Pages will be issued initially and at each revision of the
manual. This list will give the structure of the manual and the correct date
of each of its pages. The list may therefore be used to check the manual
for completeness and currency.

C. Record of Revisions

(1) When required, some pages of the manual will be amended, approved
and reissued as a revision. A revision to the manual has a transmittal
letter, a revised list of effective pages and pages with new or revised text
and illustrations. Revised contents lists are only issued when necessary.

(2) Each transmittal letter has, at its head, a certification statement which
approves the revision. The final part of the transmittal letter gives a
summary of the changes made and the page numbers that change. You

io n d
at co te
) ct
must remove all other pages that have the same page number, but an

ns ta

Mk.50 HELICOPTER PASSENGER
FLIGHT JACKET (SENTINEL)
1. INTRODUCTION
A. The Mk.50 Flight Jacket (Fig 101) is a personal flotation device to aid the wearer,
who may be either conscious or unconscious, to keep afloat. The flight jacket
will supply a minimum of 275 Newtons of buoyancy.
B. The flight jacket is manually inflated once the wearer is in the water and when fully
inflated, it will turn the wearer, even when unconscious, to an angle of between
30° to 60° from the vertical with their mouth and nose held clear of the water.
C. The flight jacket is available in two variants:
(1) Single chamber - The inflatable stole is a single chamber device with a
single inflation system and a single oral inflation valve.
(2) Twin chamber - The inflatable stole has two chambers which can be inflated
independently of each other. Each chamber has an inflation system and
an oral inflation valve. Twin chamber stoles are supplied for redundancy
if there is a leak in one of the air chambers or it does not inflate.

io n d
(3) A training version of each variant is also available.

B. Replacement items are removed iaw Chapter 3 and attached iaw Chapter 8.

C. If the Flight Jacket cannot be repaired within these limits, but is otherwise
serviceable, it should be returned to the manufacturer to check.

2. CONDITIONS OF REPAIR AND RENEWAL

A. Repairs to, or renewal of, parts or components of the inflatable stole are permitted,
in line with the repair limitations detailed in the manual.

B. The cut ends of Nylon or Polyester components are to be heat sealed to prevent
frayed ends. Nylon or Polyester fabrics and webbings are usually cut and heat-
sealed by an electrically-heated wire ‘knife’.

C. All stitches are to be done with thread, Nylon, Black.

D. Replacement fabric components, are to be offset so that new stitches do not

occupy original stitch holes. All is to be sewn with the applicable thread and
the machine set to a pitch of 7 to 10 stitches per 25 mm.

CHAPTER 7
25-60-364 Page 703
Dec 01/15
Mk.50 HELICOPTER PASSENGER

E. Broken stitches are to be repaired by the insertion of new stitches, as far as
possible to pass through the original stitch holes and extend to 13 mm beyond
the broken portion and onto the original stitches. Locking off is to be done with
back stitches.

F. Stitches along the edges are to be not less than 2 mm from the edge of the
seam, and both ends of a line that is sewn are to be back-tacked for not less
than 13 mm. When a line is sewn continuously, the ends are to overlap for not
less than 13 mm.

G. Small holes can be darned if they are of up to 3 mm in diameter. In all conditions,

thread, nylon, black shall be used. The threads used to darn are to be parallel
to the wrap and weft of the material and are to be in light tension.

H. Be careful when a component is renewed, to prevent damage to the garment

material. When the component is renewed, the repair area is to be brushed
clean and made fully free of all thread ends. Renewal of components is to be

io n d
hand stitched with the full backstitch method (Fig 701 refers).

3. METHODS OF RENEWAL
a

A. Patching (for training jackets only)

CAUTION: PATCHES MUST NOT BE PUT OVER THE SEAMS.

(1) Patches are to be manufactured from self fabric. A maximum of only two
patches are permitted on each lifejacket.

(2) A patch must be large enough to extend 25 mm + 5 mm/-0 mm beyond

the damaged area on all sides (Fig 702 refers).

(3) The minimum distance between a patch and a seam must not be less
than 10 mm.

(4) Lifejackets damaged outside these limits must be deemed unserviceable

and returned to the manufacturer for assessment.

(b) Cut a patch of the correct size of self fabric. If a rectangle patch is
to be used, round the corners to prevent peeling.

(c) Lay the patch in position and mark around the periphery of the patch
using tailors chalk or a chinagraph pencil.

(d) Wipe clean the proofed surface on the patch (the shiny side) with a
cloth dampened, NOT SOAKED, with Toluene.

(e) Polyurethane-coated fabrics must be prepared for bonding by

thoroughly priming the proofed surface with the solvent MEK
immediately before application of the first coat of adhesive. The
solvent is applied with a lint-free fabric pad. The pad must be damp
with the solvent, but the solvent must not drip from the pad. Prime
the surface until it has a matt appearance and is slightly tacky.

(f) If priming Polyurethane surfaces in a hot, humid environment, the

rapid evaporation of the MEK solvent can cause the formation of
atmospheric dew.

CHAPTER 7

Dec 01/15
Mk.50 HELICOPTER PASSENGER
FLIGHT JACKET (SENTINEL)
CAUTION: DO NOT WORK IN THESE CONDITIONS AS POOR
ADHESION WILL RESULT.

(g) For best results, make the MEK wipe at standard room temperature
and apply the adhesive within 10-20 seconds of the MEK wipe. The
best time limits for applying adhesive at other temperatures can be
found by experimenting with identical fabrics. After the time limit, the
receptiveness of Polyurethane surfaces for Polychloroprene adhesive
decreases rapidly.

(h) Apply the first coat of adhesive immediately after the first MEK wipe.
If you make several applications of MEK solvent, the solvent will
become less effective.

(i) Using a 25 mm paintbrush, apply three coats of BASE 2402 adhesive

to the stole and the primed side of the patch, allowing each coat to
become touch-dry before applying each subsequent coat.

CHAPTER 11

Jun 14
Mk.50 HELICOPTER PASSENGER
FLIGHT JACKET (SENTINEL)
1. GENERAL

A. The Illustrated Parts List (I.P.L.) has been prepared for the sole function to identify
and/or order replacement parts only, it should not be used for any other function.

2. INTRODUCTION

A. Illustrations

(1) A view of each assembly, exploded as necessary, to show the component

parts thereof is given. Each illustration is given a figure number. All
illustrated parts are given item numbers which relate to the item numbers
on the parts list page(s).

(2) When it is not possible to illustrate on the basic illustration all variants of an
assembly, additional illustrations will be given. The additional illustrations
will bear the same figure number as the basic illustration, but will be
suffixed by a letter, taken in alpha sequence, A through Z. When additional

io n d
illustrations are used it will be shown in ‘FIG-ITEM’ column of the parts list.

at co te
) ct
ns ta
B. Item Numbering lic py rin
ub co P
l P d en

(1) In each illustration the items are numbered from 1 and, as a general rule,
continue in increments of 10, e.g. 10, 20, 30 etc., to let new items be
ca lle h
ni tro W

put into the sequence without the necessity for the full renumbering of
subsequent items.
ch on lled

(2) All item numbers will be basic numbers (i.e. 10, 20, 30 etc.), however,
Te c ro

should variants and/or alternatives to the basic part be necessary, they

nt

will be shown as alpha numbers (i.e. 10A, 10B, 10C etc.) using alpha
or o

sequence variants.
(F Unc
a

C. Non-Illustrated Items

(1) Some item numbers in the parts list are preceded by a hyphen (-). This
shows that this item number will not be found on the illustration, either
because it is not policy to illustrate such an item, e.g. breaking thread, or,
because the item is not illustrated in the form in which it is listed (i.e. the
item may be listed as an assembly, but illustrated ‘exploded’, in order to
show the component parts that may be procurable).

D. Part Number

(1) The part number given in this column (in the majority of cases), will be the
part number given by the Design Authority for that applicable item.

E. Nomenclature

(1) A brief description of the item is included, this includes a descriptive noun
plus any additional descriptive words which aid in the identification of the
item. Extra useful information, such as dimensions, materials etc. may
also be included.

F. Quantity (QTY) Column

(1) In this column ‘RF’ shows that an item is ‘Reference Only’ at this location. In
other words, it is already recorded for spares function in another illustration
as part of another assembly or sub- assembly.

(2) ‘AR’ means, ‘As Required’. It is usually applied to items such as cordage,
where quantity requirements may change from assembly to assembly.

(3) The number given in this column against each item is the quantity of that
item necessary per assembly, per sub-assembly or per sub-sub-assembly

io n d
as applicable.
