Advanced Wireless and Mobile Communication (ECEG-6303) Final Examination

Date: 23/12/2021

Time Allowed: 2.5Hrs

Answer the Following Questions as Briefly and Clearly as Possible.

1. In cellular mobile network design explain what will happen

to the system capacity if you perform the following.
(10pts.)

i. Decrease cell radius iii. Increase number of

ii. Increase cluster size clusters
iv. Splitting of cells

2. In a cellular mobile system, 75MHz bandwidth is allocated

in such a way that two 200 kHz simplex channels make-up a
full duplex communication. If 5MHZ of the allocated
spectrum is dedicated to control channels, and if a 10 kHz
guard band is used, determine an equitable distribution of
control channels and traffic channels for the following
cluster size implementations. (10pts.)

i. 4 cell reuse iii. 12 cell reuse

ii. 7 cell reuse

3. The acceptable signal strength in a certain cellular mobile

network is 17dB. If the path loss exponent is 3, what is
the recommended cluster size. (10pts.)

4. An Omni directional transmitter at the center of a circular

field radiates a sinusoidal carrier wave at a frequency of
900MHZ. For a receiver on a bike driving tangentially
around the field with a speed of 200m/s, determine the
following. (10pts.)
i) The maximum Doppler shift
ii) Approximate length of receiver antenna for a good
reception

1
5. Given the following PDP, answer the subsequent questions
regarding small scale fading parameters. (10pts.)

i. Evaluate Mean Excess Delay and RMS Delay Spread

ii. If 4-QAM is used in the process, what is the maximum
attainable bit rate with no equalizer?
iii. Assuming highly frequency correlated environment, which
system can be deployed without equalization, AMPS, GSM or
neither?

6. Suppose you are asked to take samples for small scale

propagation measurements of GSM 1800 mobile network in a
high-speed train running with a speed of 350km/hr. Assuming
the samples are highly correlated in time, determine the
following parameters for the sampling. (10pts.)
i. Calculate the proper sampling interval
ii. How many samples are required in 10 meters distance?
iii. How long does it take to take the samples?

Good Luck!
