Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name:

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: ESS3.A: Earth and Human Activity ● All materials, energy, and fuels
that humans use are derived from natural sources, and their use affects the environment in multiple
ways. Some resources are renewable over time and some are not.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
1.4.a Design process: Students know and use a be able to do by the end of this lesson:
deliberate design process for generating ideas,
testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or Students should understand the
solving authentic problems effects of pollution and design an
idea for decreasing pollution.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
Students will create a sway presentation to share their idea on a way individuals can reduce
pollution.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will create their own Sway presentation on an idea to reduce pollution. Sway will be
introduced by showing my Sway presentation on pollution at the beginning of the lesson. I
will make students aware of their goal by writing an I can sentence at the front of the
classroom for this activity. Students will utilize the technology in the classroom in small

groups. I will introduce my presentation and then be there for support during their work
time. Feedback will be provided once the students have turned in their projects. We will
conclude the lesson by sharing their presentations.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
Students will design their project in groups of four to five to vitalize co-engagement. Students
will also discuss their plan with their group and then present their final idea to me before
moving on to creating their Sway. I will also check-in on groups periodically throughout the
project.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Sway allows for students to represent their creative
ideas in multiple ways. Sway allows students to incorporate text, images, and audio. Sway
also allows students in their groups to each give input in their design. It easily showcases
their ideas on how to reduce pollution and gives them a better understanding of pollution.
Using Sway also gives students an opportunity to learn a new way to showcase their ideas
rather than just using a poster.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This lesson allows students to learn about pollution ad connect it to their own ideas on how
pollution can be reduced. It connects their knowledge on pollution to their everyday lives. I
look forward to showing students that they can also make a difference in the world of
science. This lesson allows students to come up with their own ways of reducing pollution
and gives them the opportunity to feel like they are making a difference In the world.
