Napoleon is a favorite fish for divers in many regions of the world. The fish can instantly
be recognized by its size, color and shape. It is one of the largest reef fish in the world. They
can grow up to 230 cm and weigh 190 kg. They have fleshy lips and a hump over the head
that is similar to a napoleon hat. The hump becomes more prominent with age.
Colors vary with age and sex. Males range from a bright electric blue to green or purplish
blue. Mature males develop a black stripe along the sides, blue spots on their body scales, and
blue scribbles on the head. Juveniles can be identified by their pale greenish color and two
black lines running behind the eye. Females, both old and young, are red-orange on the upper
parts of their bodies and red-orange to white yellow.
Napoleon fish are carnivorous and eat during the day. They can be seen feasting on
shellfish, other fish, sea stars, sea urchins and crabs, crushing the shells to get the animal
within. They also crush large chunks of dead coral rubble with peg-like teeth to feed on the
burrowing mussels and worms.
Pairs spawn together as part of a larger mating group that may consist of over 100
individuals. The planktonic eggs are released into the water, and once the larvae have hatched
they will settle out on the substrate. Adult females are able to change sex but the triggers for
this development are not yet known.
The Napoleon is mainly found on coral reef edges and drop-offs. They move into shallow
bays during the day to feed, and tend to move into deeper waters as they grow older and
large. Adults, therefore, are more common offshore than inshore.

Hurricanes are giant, spiralling tropical storms that can pack wind speeds of over 160 miles
(257 kilometers) an hour and unleash more than 2.4 trillion gallons (9 trillion liters) of rain a
day.

Hurricanes begin as tropical disturbances in warm ocean waters with surface temperatures of
least 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.5 degrees Celsius). These low pressure systems are fed by
energy from the warm seas. If a storm achieves wind of 38 miles (61 kilometers) an hour, it
becomes known as a tropical depression. A tropical depression becomes a tropical storm,
when its sustained wind speeds top 39 miles (63 kilometers) an hour. When a storm’s
sustained wind speeds reach 74 miles (119 kilometers) an hour, it becomes a hurricane and
earns a category rating of 1 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson

At Some Point in History, Bonnethead Sharks Added Plants to Their Meals

Bonnetheads are a type of shark. They are similar to hammerheads. Scientists

thought bonnethead sharks were carnivores. Carnivores eat only meat. Sometimes, the
bonnethead sharks ate sea grass at the bottom of the ocean. Scientists figured that was by
accident.
That was wrong, a team of scientists said. The bonnetheads are omnivores.
Omnivores eat both meat and plants. The sea grass helps keep the shark healthy. Scientists
knew the sharks ate a lot of sea grass, said Samantha Leigh. Leigh is an expert on ocean
plants and animals. She works at the University of California, Irvine. Leigh also helped lead
the team of scientists. Sharks hunt for crabs and other sea creatures. They live in the sea
meadows. Scientists thought the sharks ate the sea grass by accident.

Plants are a Big Part of Their Diet

Scientists did not think the sharks got nutrients from the grass. Nutrients are the
fuel that living things need. Different kinds of animals need different nutrients. The team did
a series of experiments over three weeks. They fed the sharks sea grass in their lab. Scientists
looked at how much of the nutrients sharks took in. They also studied the sharks’ poop.
The sharks rely on sea grass, the scientists found. Sea grass makes up more than
half of the sharks' diet. The sharks' bodies get nutrients from the plants. The sharks are clearly
omnivores, they wrote. All the sharks gained weight from the sea grass. That meant that their
bodies could absorb, or take in, nutrients in the sea grass. Leigh said she was surprised by the
results.
Sea grass is Important for Animals and the Ocean
The scientists also want to know how they eat sea grass. Many herbivores have a
second jaw to chew plants. Sharks only have one jaw. However, their stomachs are very
acidic. That may help the sharks break down food.
Sea grass grows in salty water. Sea grass meadows are the largest coastal
ecosystem on Earth, which helps clean the water and air. Thousands of fish and shellfish live
in sea grass meadows. Sharks and other sea carnivores eat them.
Almost 5 million Bonnethead swim in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. Scientists
need to know what sharks eat. This helps the people who want to protect the meadows. Shark
ancestors were carnivores, but experts do not know when Bonnetheads began eating plants.
What does it mean? There may be other plant-eating sharks out there, said Leigh.

36. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

The bonnetheads are omnivores

37. How did Scientists prove that the sharks got nutrients from the grass ?
The sharks rely on sea grass, the scientists found. Sea grass makes up more than half of the
sharks' diet. The sharks' bodies get nutrients from the plants. The sharks are clearly
omnivores, they wrote. All the sharks gained weight from the sea grass. That meant that their
bodies could absorb, or take in, nutrients in the sea grass
38. What is the function of sea grass ?
Sea grass meadows are the largest coastal ecosystem on Earth, which helps clean the water
and air
