History of The Failure of Quebec Bridge, Canada.

86 workers on the bridge that August 29, 1907, 75 died, many of them local Caughnawaga, famous
for their high steel work. Some of the dead had been crushed by the twisted steel; others by the
fall. Still others drowned before the rescue boats could reach them.
The disaster showed what unquestionable power an engineer could have at the time in a project
that was improperly supervised.
• As one result, Galbraith and others formed around 1925 what are now recognized as
organizations of Professional Engineers. PEs are under different rules and regulations based
on the organization to which they belong.
• The general guidelines include that an engineer must pass an ethical examination, be
able to show good character through the use of character witnesses and have
applicable engineering experience (in Canada this constitutes a minimum of four years'
practice under a certified Professional Engineer).
• Moreover, engineers must be registered in the province in which they work. These
engineering organizations are regulated by the respective provinces and the title
"Professional Engineer" (or "Ingénieur" in Quebec) is reserved only to members who belong
to this organization.

75 dari 86 pekerja yang semuanya ahli konstruksi baja tewas setelah ambruknya jembatan baja
yang sedang dikerjakan di kota Caughnawaga, Quebec, Canada, di sore hari tanggal 29 Agustus
1907. Musibah ini merupakan kehilangan besar dan menjadi pelajaran betapa pentingnya
“profesionalisme’.
Musibah ini menjadi bukti bahwa dalam setiap aktifitas keinsinyuran terkandung resiko atau
kekuatan yang luar biasa dahsyatnya dan bisa menghancurkan manakala aktifitas itu tidak
dilaksanakan secara profesional dan disupervisi dengan baik.
• Diinspirasi dari peristiwa itu, Mr. Galbraith pada th 1925 membentuk perkumpulan yang
sekarang disebut sebagai organisasi Professional Engineers (PE).
• Organisasi-organisasi PE mulai bermunculan di belahan utara Amerika, yang masing-masing
dengan aturan sendiri-sendiri sesuai kebutuhan dan wilayahnya.
• Namun, hal yang pasti adalah bahwa untuk menjadi seorang PE, Insinyur harus lulus
dari ujian etika, harus memiliki karakter yang baik, serta memiliki pengalaman praktik
yang cukup. (di Canada minimal telah berpraktik selama 4 th di bawah pengawasan
Insinyur Profesional senior).
• Insinyur Profesional yang berpraktik Keinsinyuran harus terdaftar. Organisasi PE juga
harus tunduk pada regulasi yang berlaku di Negara/Negara Bagian ybs.
