Good afternoon! As presented, I will be reporting about O Sei San, Rizal’s Japanese lover.

2nd slide (O Sei San)

Aside from being the national hero, Rizal was also known for having “a long list of ex-lovers.” He
met and fell in love with all sorts of women from different parts of the world of whom Seiko Usui
is one. Seiko Usui also goes by the name O Sei San. She is a Japanese samurai’s daughter
and serves as an epitome of a high- cultured Japanese woman.

3rd slide (The Romantic Affair)

As per the Romantic affair, The story began during Rizal’s second trip abroad. From Hong
Kong, he moved to Japan on February 1888 upon the invitation of Don Juan Perez Caballero to
work for him in the Spanish Legation.

One afternoon, Rizal saw Seiko passing by the legation in one of her daily afternoon walks.
Doon nagsimua ang lahat dahil nabighani agad si Rizal sa kagandahan nito. Kaya’t nagtanong
siya sa isang hardinero tungkol sa ilang bagay o impormasyon ukol kay Seiko at syay Naging
tulay upang magkaunawaan ang dalawa dahil magkaiba sila ng wikang ginagamit. Ngunit,
nalaman nilang pareho silang gamay sa wikang Ingles at Pranses, at dito na sila nagsimula
mag usap at magsama.

Seiko voluntarily acted as Rizal’s tour guide, tutor, and interpreter. Ipinasyal niya si Rizal sa
mga Japan’s shrines, parks, pati na rin sa mga universitires at ibat iba pang mga magagandang
lugar gaya ng Imperial Art Gallery, Imperial Library, at Botanical Garden. Bukod pa rito, si O Sei
San din ang naging tutor at interpreter ni Rizal sa kanyang pamamalagi sa Japan, tinulungan
niya si Rizal na magimprove pa sa wikang Hapon o Nihonggo, at tinuruan niya rin itong ng ibat
ibang mga kultura at tradisyon gaya ng Kabuki plays at Su-mie (Japanese art of painting).

Kaya naman hindi na nakapagtataka pa na nahulog ang loob ni Rizal kay O Sei San. Sa
kabilang dako, nasuklian rin naman ni O Sei San ang pag-ibig ni Rizal sa kanya.

4th slide (The Parting)

Ngunit kahit pa man masaya ang naging relasyon nila, kinailangan nilang maghiwalay dahil sa
mga tungkulin at layunin ni Rizal para sa kanyang bayan.

Noong ika-labing tatlo ng Abril isang libo’t walong daan walumput walo, matapos ang isang
buwan nilang ugnayan ni O Sei San, lumipad si Rizal patungo sa San Francisco bitbit ang
ideyang kailanman ay hindi na sila muli pang magkikita.

5th slide (Diary Entry)

Ito ang sinabi ni rizal sa gabi ng knyang pag alis sa Japan.

“Japan has enchanted me. The beautiful scenery, the flowers, the trees, and the
inhabitants – so peaceful, so courteous, and so pleasant. O-Sei-San, Sayonara,
Sayonara! I have spent a happy golden month; I do not know if I can have another one
like that in all my life. Love, money, friendship, appreciation, honors –these have not
been wanting. To think that I am leaving this life for the uncertain, the unknown. There I
was offered an easy way to live, beloved and esteemed…”

Makikita rito na hindi lang niya ipinahayag kung gaano kaganda ang bansa ngunit pati na rin
ang pagmamahal at pasasalamat niya na nakilala niya ang isang maganda, matalino, at mabait
na si O Sei San. Kasama na rin ang pamamalam niya rito, Sayonara ika ni Rizal, na ang ibig
sabihin ay goodbye.

6th slide (The Song)

The most relevant song for Rizal and O Sei San’s love story is Somewhere Down The Road by
Barry Manilow. As its lyrics go,

We had the right love

At the wrong time
Guess I always knew inside
I wouldn't have you for a long time

Letting go is just another way to say

I'll always love you so
We had the right love at the wrong time
Maybe we've only just begun
Maybe the best is yet to come

The song tells about a love that needed sacrifice because it’s simply just not the right time for it.

As victims of “wrong-time” love, this song shows the unfortunate love affair of Rizal and Seiko.
They had to let go of each other for Rizal to achieve his dreams for his country.

But it is true that the best was yet to come for them during those times. They never met again
and married other people.

Sa bandang huli, hindi na muling nakapagkita ang dalawa at nagkaroon ng kanya kanyang
asawa. Nakapag asawa si Seiko ng isang English and chemistry teacher na si Alfred Charlton
at nagkaroon ng anak.

At sa edad na walumpo, si seiko ay namatay.
